I too despise those bolts! I've never had one of the captive
things succeed in capturing the nut, if you get my meaning! The
worst one is when someone has put 3 foot long bolts in there and
left them full length :banghead

if you are taking over drive off split the transfer box off then
leave it near the vehicle save the effort and just lift out main
box no crane needed

I can probably head up one afternoon/evening with a functioning
gearbox and or spares to make yours function if that's any help.
If yours is a lateish suffix IIA box, then the bellhousing would
go on straight my SIII box, and give you that bolted in and was
fit to drive...
If it gives you any pleasure, my job for tonight is to change
the layshaft bearing and re-assemble NOG's box after it blew
said layshaft bearing last week... however I have the luxury of
two (more or less) functioning LR's at the moment, so its been
less of a panic than normal to do...

if the overdrive is taken off and the transfer box off then the
gearbox will come out from underneath with a little wiggling no
need to take the seat box out.

Given how much of a faff it is to remove the transfer box etc
insitu, I've allway pulled the boxes as one, o/d and all, comes
out quite easily and then you can roll the thing around on the
edge of the handbrake drum.
The easiest way I've found to lift one out is with a small
ratchet chain block suspended of a bit of 3x2 wedged into the
hardtop above the doors. Somethign like this...

Aye, pretty much like me, not these Southern-Style poofters that
dismantle the friggin' lot, that's nearly 3 quid for gaskets! I
just lob a fanbelt around the handbrake drum, and hoik the
entire thing out of the door. Then nip to visit my Masseuse.
Cough.

Thanks everyone!
John - I might well take you up on your offer for help. I might
need a hand chucking a box back in, and I heard you have had
lots of practise! ;D
I got the box out tonight after work. Fucking hateful job. I
thought it would come out easily since it's not been in that
long... :haha: No.
I took the overdrive off to get some more clearance and also
because it's the only fucking way to get the speedo cable out
::). I borrowed a crane from work and after much swearing and
kicking things got the box out OK. What a shit job though, it's
a piss awkward shape, off balance, gets caught on everything and
every time you move it threatens to smash the dashboard to bits
on a 2a! :blahblah

Anyway, it's out and I'll strip it down after work for tomorrow
to see what carnage lays within.

I can't think what you might be referring to.
That said, it looks like you have two disadvantages over me...
no removable cross-member, and no forklift to pick the truck up
with so there is room to get the box out with from
underneath.... although I'm just in the middle of doing NOG's
box which has had to come out of the top.
Anyhow, just let me know if you want to to come up, and if so if
I should come bearing a functioning gearbox... (I need an excuse
to try Bitsa on a decent motorway run with the new 5 speed and
super-high top gear - she now does 2411rpm at 70mph, which
should be lovely and relaxed).

Well, I stripped the box down tonight. Nothing seemed
particularly amiss until I pulled the layshaft out, and some of
it stayed behind... ::)

Snapped cleanly just after 1st gear.

Fortunately I appear to have been lucky, as none of the gears
appear to have been damaged, no chips or missing teeth. The
stupid chocolate rear layshaft bearing is bent though.
Hopefully I should be able to rebuild with a new layshaft and
bearings. When I built this gearbox I reused the original
layshaft as there didn't appear to be anything wrong with it,
but after a chat with Whitehouse gearbox rebuilders it seems
that the layshaft work hardens with age and use until one day it
snaps without warning. Ho hum, lesson learnt!
