Hodgey has done this conversion. Worth looking at his v8 S2
rebuild thread.

Landrover increased the track on the rail rover by about 7
inches by using spacers between FC wheels and the brake drum.
Would probably kill the bearings quite quickly though. You
could go for spacers on the end of the axle casing and then use
longer halfshafts.

If you use coil axles, you can mitigate the "out-of-wing" effect
by using steel disgay rims. These are very strong, are 7" wide,
are proper tubeless rims, have virtually no offset and you can
pick them up for peanuts (or even for free!).
This is Dougal with 6" wider Series axles. (Yes.....such things
do exist!)

ok... showing my bi - cureous side here :gay: & apologies for
the thread hijack too, but my current wheel / tyre combination
is rapidly deteriorating & i am skint, hearing that you can get
such things for peanuts has my attention!
will standard steel discovery 1 wheels take a 235/85/r16 tyre &
will this combination sit under a SWB series 3 with no extra
bolt on/ hassle?

Looks great! How did you sort out the steering issue, I can see
it's cranked, but also INFRONT of the axle??

Yes, they will fit straight on, but you may lose a small amount
of steering lock because of the lack of offset on the rims.
However I don't think this will be much of a problem on an 88".
Strang of this Parish can enlighten more on this, he's had them
on his 88" for yonks. :gay:

The axle came with the track rod still attached. As I said , it
is a Series axle, that is the standard position for the track
rod. It's cranked to clear the Salisbury diff. casing.
