Dan, Series 2A Flatdeck.

Meet Dan. My farm hack, He's a 65' SWB Flat-deck, 2.25. In very
faded and chalky pastel green;

He was originally bought as a parts donor, But He was just too
handy around the property as a giant wheelbarrow, To shift logs
and crap around.
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/RIMG0176.jpg
Ive now owned him over 9 months and finally, Decided to repair
the brakes over the Easter break.
I replaced the rear cylinders, Bled the system, Adjusted up the
drums and hey presto!, It stops!.
The chassis is rotten in places, and as far as I can tell the
original rear cross member still!. The gear box is noisy as
hell, I hear filling them with saw dust helps ;)
And the engine is also original, Sounds quite good - just the
timing chain rattling abit.
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/RIMG0196.jpg
The p/o spent a small fortune sorting the suspension, all new
bushes, Bolts and shocks (I stole the shocks and fitted them to
my everyday Series - Its last WOF/MOT had an advisory on the
shocks.) And he replaced the wooden deck at somepoint.
Theres a few jobs that need doing; The sliding rear window is
missing, and the drivers door is well shagged and pops open
often, It probably does'nt help that the cab moves and flexes
quite a bit.
Otherwise all is ok for bimbling around lugging tut around.
Some pictures;

The sliding glass in the back of cab was replaced, And I managed
to get a Series 2 door to replace the Series 3 door, It was just
down the road, Even got the faded patina to it ;D.

Over the winter I gathered a couple of solex carbs, Along with a
carb kit to build a good one. Thats over a month ago and the
carb seems to be doing a good job.
As long as I've had Dan the front crankshaft seal has leaked a
staggering amount of oil.
Its been on the list of "I'll get a round to it" jobs for a fair
bit, And then the brake master cylinder started leaking fluid
into the cab,
Then more recently a core plug at the front of the block started
to weep.
Today I set to fixing all the little problems that soon add up;
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0651.jpg
I took the wings and radiator panel off and gave everything a
good clean, The stuff was over an inch thick in places.
So after attacking the engine with a scraper, degreaser and a
pressure washer, I could so what I was working with.
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0652.jpg
Also found this lovely crack along the top of the front
crossmember and carrying on down the main chassis rail, behind
the steering relay;
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0653.jpg
Geuss I'll need to take the gas bottle to be refilled, after
using it all up repairing the 'new' door - The check strap
bracket was falling off;
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0654.jpg
The starter dog was a real bastard to move, I decided against
taking the sump off and chocking the crank up with a block of
wood.
I got a hand, And the old man had it in top gear, with his foot
on the brake, to lock everything up as I swung off the bar.
A 2-foot bar didnt do any good on the dog, so I slid a tie bar
over the end for a bit more leverage. It let go with an alarming
crack.
Once the pulley was off I could see the mud shelid was riveted
on, So the front timing cover, along with the sump, would have
to come off anyway.
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0657.jpg
The old seal was age hardend and had shrunk a fair amount. It
was brittle enough to fall the bits when I pryed it out.
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0658.jpg
And soon enough it was getting cooler and dark started to fall,
so I wrapped it up for the day;

I seem to get carried away easily with some things, And and this
'fixing little problems' session was no exeption, (no, I aint
painted it) But I now have a reliable leafer that runs like a
watch of swiss manufacture.
The core plug was no real problem, untill i found the other two
large ones were about the same way, So with those out, the block
got a well needed flush of all sediment and scale build-up, then
new core plugs were tapped in with a bit of hylomar;
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0670.jpg
With the timing cover off, I thought I might aswell change the
cam chain, theres a few of them sitting on the shelf, so a new
one of them went on and the sump got a good swill out of all the
gooey shit in the bottom.
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0662.jpg
Might as well change the intake manifold, as there was an nice
hole with an exhaust leak just below the carb. Then the head
might as well come off, to change the valve seals and grind the
valves in a bit;
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0668.jpg
The distributor recieved some new springs for the mech advance.
I put back on an original coil along with some leads and battery
clamp frame, which looks a bit more in keeping I reckon.
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0680.jpg
I zipped along with the mig on the crack in the front cross
member, and down the chasis rail on the opposite side. The
missing shock absorbers which I robbed were replaced with some
oldys but goodys. Tidied up some wiring and got the single wiper
motor running all good.
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0682.jpg
Pressure washed once more, Inside and out, Evicting all spiders
and other nasties that had taken up residence;
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0681.jpg
Now that everything was back together and fluids topped up,
things started to get out of control, The Nice green water
barrel got taken off and gave the wooden deck a couple of coats
of timber oil;
HTML http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/hey124/DSC_0689.jpg
Pretty.
All that done I think were ready for another years problem free
hard graft, Its really quiet now, starts if you sneeze near it,
and has more than enough power to pull the skin off your rice
pudding.
Still to re-kit the brake master cylinder at some point though.
Cheers!, Jack

A little bit of an update, since the engine work and general
fettling.
The engine is still good, starts up after the odd week of
standing, Still oil tight and no coolant leaks.
I filled the gearbox with oil and so far its oil tight :-X, Nice
and quiet too!
Brake master no longer leaks, I think all the recent use has
bedded the seal back in ???, Im not sure, Its working for now
anyway.
And spiders have taken up residence again, with a vengence >:(.
Some recent photos;

The brake master cylinder has been leaking for a little while
now, Today I finally got around to fitting a reconditioned
master cylinder. Thats after ploughing the gate to the paddock
down :haha:

I can see why the old one was leaking, Seals are well past there
best.
