Metal Spraying vs Hot Dip Galvanising

I spoke to a local galvaniser (who is currently out of business
following a fire) who actually recommended metal spraying for
refreshing the galvanised cappings on a LR rather than hot
dipping.
What does everyone think? Is this a cheaper option?

Depends if you want it to look like new or not rust. Spraying
doesnt give the same finish as dipping.

Personally i would go for the hot dipping for something like
cappings, I think for thin sheet stuff like a bulkhead spraying
has the advantage that there is no risk it will buckle or
distort.
If you dont like the bright look of newly galvanised stuff I
found that the rust killer sold by machine mart does a good job
of making it dull, just give it a light wipe over, i think it is
the Phosphoric acid that does it?

Spraying gives a very course matt white finish, like this:

I had my bulkhead and front panel hot zinc sprayed, as I was
worried about them distorting when dipped. They come out really
well, but the finish is very matt and I would imagine porous. I
painted my bulkhead and front panel in anti rust epoxy based
paint to seal them up proper before the DBG went on.
I wouldn't get the tub cappings zinc sprayed, It would look all
wrong and you'd probably have to paint them after anyway.

What Goose says ^^^. With bells on.
Hot spraying is a good, tough coating that will last well even
if unpainted, but it is a flat coarse matt finish. I did my
bulkhead and front panel about a decade ago now, after which I
etch primed and sprayed with several coats of DBG. Then lots of
waxoyl, applied with the bulkhead upside down as well as right
way up. No signs of any problems, and hopefully won't have any
for years more to come.
If you're going to paint something, or it's thin section and
distortion could be an issue, then hot metal spray it first, but
if you're doing stuff like cappings, screen frame etc., which
were galv from the factory, then get them redone in galv.
The shiny silver dulls down really quickly if you just leave it
exposed to the elements.
Got this lot redone last year for £90, which was the minimum
charge - I could have got more than twice as much done for the
same money if I'd had more time to sort stuff out beforehand.

Thanks all. And great to see the pictures. The spray finish is
not what I'm looking for. Clearly looks are more important to me
than I first thought.
Need to find another galvaniser near me now.

Medway Galvanising? They're the people I use. Very good in my
experience.
