Mooching at Marley Hill - now with more pics

I had to work today, delivering wide screen tellys and
playstations to wankers from as far south as Rotherham and as
far north as Newcastle upon Tyne. So once I'd finished in the
Toon I went for a mooch.
Marley Hill engine shed was built in 1854. It was in use by the
NCB right up until 1970 and is now preserved as part of the
Tanfield Railway.
It's a proper timewarp and even if some of the stuff isn't
original it looks like it's been there since old George
Stephenson was around and isn't all clinical and soulless like
most museums and preserved railways. Unfortunately the railway
wasn't running today but they let me wander around the shed and
yard (without a hi-viz!) and look at the rusty stuff outside.
Inside is where they keep the working locos and what a
collection of lovely old colliery locos they are!
Excuse the shit pics, they were taken on my shit phone.

Come on, Brian! That's the classic profile of a Hawthorn Leslie.
This is a big one though, with 16" cylinders. It was built in
1914 for the Lambton & Hetton collieries.

Should have worked Lambton out from the cab...
I can see the family resemblance to the more usual smaller
Hawthorn Leslie now you mention it :haha:

The Tanfield started in 1725 and is the oldest working railway
in the world, and well worth a visit on an operating day. That
place in Leeds only claims to be the oldest as it has an Act of
Parliament rather than a Wayleave!
If you go down to the Causey Arch (oldest railway bridge known
to survive) you can trace several of the Wagonway branches. They
run a lot of old 4 and 6 wheeled coaches, plus some converted
parcel vans so you have the atmosphere of a Paddy Train.
That said, it is possible to trace the Wollaton Wagonways round
here that were recorded as operational in 1604!

Well looks like the place to be at the mo, just got back from
Hols. Had a cottage about 10 walk from Tanfield. Had better
weather.
