Cruising speed for 2.25P

I understand the top speed of a standard S2a is mid 60's, but
what is a sensible safe cruising speed?
Tonight I took mine to around 55mph and I'm not totally
comfortable that it's a safe speed to hold for mile after
mile...
I've not got an overdrive, but I am running 235/85 tyres, so the
gearing is a little higher.
I am hoping to achieve a realistic fuel consumption as well.
Speed ain't everything but I don't want to spend hours and hours
getting anywhere at crawling speed. Should I get free wheeling
hubs?

If you haven't recalibrated the speedo, or swapped it for a 109
jobbie, you'll be driving faster than 55 anyway.....

not sure what 235's are in proper measurements, - somewhere near
750's?
if so 55 will be fine for it
Top speed is near enough 70 (to LR's figures)
I usually run at 55 with 750's no overdrive , but have when
going a long way run at 60 for hours on end on motorways (even
towing)
I wouldn't run it consistently about that without an overdrive
Running just the LR I get 22-23mpg at 55 ish cruise (the same
when it had an OD)

Interestingly I went to 750's and left the SWB speedo in, and it
now reads dead on :WTF

I've checked the speed at 30mph, and with these tyres on it is
exactly right. 30mph on the clock IS 30mph on the road.
I've not yet tested the speed above this using sat nav, but I'm
presuming it should be reasonably accurate.

well 55 ish is best for speed and fuel i recon....my dads s3
went well at 60 but was more expensive in fuel. i would work at
the average at the way you drive which for you graham will be
about 7000 mpg......... rofl

I don't think safety is an issue nor wear and tear on a 2.25
engine, it's more what your ears can take. 55ish without
overdrive isn't a bad bet, slipstreaming a wagon on the motorway
can save a bit of fuel. Even with Roverdrive, stage 2 head, 2.5
petrol, SU carb, 255 tyres etc etc on the 88 I tend not to push
it to 70. The shed-like aerodynamics are what kills the economy.
I did read somewhere that at 70mph with a standard 2.25 petrol
70 of the 77bhp is used to fight wind resistance, only 7bhp
rolling resistance. I'd believe it myself!

45- 50mph even with overdrive is a happy enough cruising speed
for me in the racer. Equates to 2300rpmish It'll soon get to 60
mind but the volume is just too much for normal driving.
It is on 235/70's though so it's quite short geared.

About 60 for me with the tilt on - anything more than that the
canvas starts to undo and it's far too noisy. Mine (as with
Noel's and Phil's) will go much faster, especially if I ignore
the horrendous fuel consumption, exhaust drone, tyre howl and
passenger complaints.

Back when my 109" was 2.25 petrol powered I got best economy at
an indicated 50. That was with 7.50s and no overdrive. Being
very gentle on the throttle to avoid exciting the accelerator
pump meant I could squeeze about 21 mpg out of it. In a hurry,
however, it would sit at 70 with no problems for as long as your
ears could stand it - I did Plymouth to Canterbury at 70+ once.
Fuel consumption dropped to about 15 mpg though.
If it's mechanically ok then you should be able to drive it flat
out if you need to.
