Not much of an update as of now as I haven't done much work to
Alfred since last summer, but there's a lot brewing....
In between all the TDI Series motors on the Swiss trip, Alfreds
2.5 N/A unit was getting very tired. To be honest, it didn't
have enough power to keep the overdrive in 4th running
continuously and with slight headwind or a little hill was
generally low on power.
With Fentiger in the shotgun seat, a cunning plan was hatched;
Toby would scour down a good 200TDI unit that would be fitted
somewhere in the spring of 2012. As lot's of people on the trip
offered a hand, it was decided that the engine swop would take
place at Nat's place, commonly known as N.O.R.K Towers.
Dickie 'Beans' Stanton stepped up and got me a rebuilt Turbo
from a 300TDI, then it became quiet for a while up until a good
200TDI surfaced and Toby fetched it (with help of Michael
White).
Then, a date was set; Easter weekend or April 6-9. Gromit called
for shotgun, and ferry dates were booked. Lots of others joined
and it looks like we will be having a great workshop weekend at
Nat's place which will be allmost a reunion from the Swiss do!

Then Toby made some alterations to the alternator setup and some
other stuff in order to be able to directly fit it in Alfred
when we come over;

Just to be sure, I asked Toby to get the head off and have it
skimmed. Reassuring news is that the bores and pistons are in
great looking order, the bad news was that during dismantling,
one of the glow plugs snapped instantly. So Toby sent of the
head for skimming and fitting a union with thread.
Finally, an oil cooler from an MGBGT was found for the project,
as we will keep the (almost new) four core Series radiator
In the meantime, Gromit finally admitted a 109 is all you need
in life and he scored a awesom looking HCPU truck on Ebay, which
Toby (the star he is) picked up for him. So we will be returning
with 2 Series back to Netherlands :-)
I really can't wait to be back in England with Alfred and meet
all my dear Series friends again, and finally have a great (and
hopefully bulletproof) engine in Alfred. To be honest, I was
hooked on TDI after the night in Switzerland where Amy
(Series3chick) let me have the wheel of Bessy :-)

well, we arrived at Nork towers for the workshop weekend after
an eventfull trip that included lots of rattling, running on 3
cylinders, miles of clouds of black smoke, a front prop that
decided to die and navigation letdown. And all that in a 20 mile
trip from my house to the ferry (what can possibly go wrong in
20 miles you'd think).
Anyway we managed to stumble to the ferry with 20mph and used
Nat's AA card for retrieval about 1 mile from the Harwich port.
Funny bloke from the AA.... "so Im told you have a diesel land
rover that smokes...that's odd"
Next up TDI engine swap!
