Nobody with a S3 diesel out there??
Can somebody tell me how the wiring should be from the solenoid
(on the back of the starting/igniton unit) to the thing on the
bulkhead (resonator or something like that) where the glowplugs
are wired to??
On mine there are 4 wires on the resonator thing but I wonder if
I fitted it correctly??
As said before: everything works, even the startermotor, but the
diesel lump does not fire...
EOD take off: Two weeks and counting... please help
Yes I found it thanks, do you also have the
numbers that go with it. For instance, what is #30?
There's a thick brown wire coming from the starter unit for what
I don't know what it's for. There's a ring at the end btw.
It's not one of the three wires that run to the dynamo btw.
Tonight I'm gonna check if the diesel pump is open and whether
the glowplugs get electra. That's the only thing I can think of.
Thanks
Yeah but the solenoid worked with the old
loom...??
Only thing I can think of is that my car operates with a starter
button, probably because the starter unit is fucked. I rewired
the solenoid and put it back on, now the last turn for tthe
glowing is "shorter" than previously...but that can hardly be
the problem right?? The starter motor runs, only the diesel does
not fire...
Btw PJ you send a scheme for a petrol, do you also have one for
diesel?

Okay, the good news is: She Runs!!!
The bad news is that the starter unit now totally is fucked up.
After all this is were the problem lies.
While changing the loom I removed the solenoid of the back of
the starter unit. (Btw Parksy at my solenoid the brown/red is on
the 5 instead of on the 1).
Before the story continues you have to know something about my
unit. Mine works with a starting button cause the unit is half
fucked up allready. I used to turn the ignition to the third
part, then push it further (with some muscle) and then cold
start light would turn orange. Then I'd hit the button and she
starts.
After changing the loom, the last push of the key was "shorter"
then before and apparently because of this, she would not make
contact and therefore glow.
I have fiddled with the 2 small screws that hold the solenoid in
the back and if you loosen them you can push the key further and
therefore glow and start.
Problem is now that I can't find the right position. It's hard
to determine when she glows cause if you turn the key too far
she wont turn on the starter engine: There is the button for...
I hope you guys kind of understand the situation. In my opinion,
to get everything right I still need to change the whole
key/starter unit and solenoid to make things right....so....;
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, CAN ANYBODY HELP ME WITH A 12V DIESEL UNIT
(i think with steering lock btw)
I'll start ringing some 2ndhand parts guys tomorrow anyway, but
it seems these things are difficult to find. So any help greatly
appreciated!
Today I picked up the new starter unit and some
other small bits.
I had an hour of time this afternoon to do some spannering, so I
removed the old unit and the stop cable, then refitted the new
unit and the new stop cable.
Tried to start it and ... hey presto! I'm getting handy in this
kinda stuff!!! Even the stop cable was right so I adjusted it
right! Happy Ruud!
But then,... I can't remove the key from the lock. After some
fiddling around I noticed that when I pull the stop cable all
out the housing, you hear a small click and then I can remove
the key. For starting I have to push the key to the III position
and put the cable back in the house...
Problem is.. how to adjust the cable so this works? I haven't
had time to find out because I have to leave now, but it's not
the same as on the previous unit though it looks thesame???
Hope my story is kinda clear to you guys. What's wrong? Did I
get a unit for a car with steering lock and mine has not or
something like that?? I cán''t change it cause it's the only
unit that i found so far over here..
Anybody any suggestions? I don't know if I can set the cable so
that my key can be removed. That would mean also that the diesel
pump would be shut when I don't ride it and that doesn't seem
okay to me...???
As always... any suggestion greatly appreciated. Hail to OLLR
and his members!
Today I found out that reading the manual can
help when fucking about with old land rovers...
So, I fixed the cable, everything works and I can take out the
key. Then the bugger would hardly start and I had almost no gas
pedal...bugger. So I ripped out the airfilter and found out that
the gascable was not in all his fittings, I probably took it out
while fitting the stop cable...sigh
Then I took the 109 for it's first ride in 10 days, off to my
father in laws place to move on with the riders door. Fitted new
hinges, clips and screws but the "new" door still did not fit.
At the end I refitted the bottom door and put on the "new" top
and fettled with everything and now the door fit's better than
ever.
I have a gut feeling that my 2ndhand under door is of inferiour
quality, some chinese britpart misfit or whatever. Anybody out
there with a decent under door, original Land Rover??
Anyway, the past 14 days I've been busy with a lot of things on
the 109 to get her ready for EOD and I can say that after almost
a year of leafer ownership I can say I'm getting the hang of it;
spannering get's easier done, although they are all fairly small
jobs to do.
I'm absolutely not like Rog or Drew who do a full chassis build
up, but with everything I do it give's me the feeling that I'm
getting smarter in it.
Still some things to do for EOD though! I'd like to fit the
softtop but I don't know if I have enough time for it. We'll see
After fixing a lot of minor problems (who
mostly I made myself) I have now managed to wrecked the
battery... :-(
Oh yeah..and I still haven't figured out how to get the bulbs in
the dash (oil, charge, glow) to work??
Anye electricians @ EoD?

Cheers FT!
Besides the fact that I'm missing the capless bulbs for the
flashers, the charging bulb and the oil/big light/glow don't
work. Oh yeah, and the fuel meter stays active when the engine
is down?? Seems like a fusebox problem somewhere?
Thanks, see you @ EoD!

If fuel gauge is working with
ignition switched off, then you have connected a switched live
to permanent live. This will also drain your battery when
ignition is off.
Safe travels.
TF
Switched live to permanent live? Please explain to me..? And
where are they located?
Just talked to my father in law.. he took the battery to a
garage and they said the battery is basically good. But then
again, my father in law charged the battery for a full night and
it's still half empty .. it hasn't charged anything (ther's a
meter on his charger so he can see)
I can't imagine I have connected the dynamo wrong, I think
there's only one way to plug in the plug, right? The charging
light does not work, but then again, no lights work at all in
the dash...
Where to look guys? Dynamo (only 6 months old) or battery? I
have ridden 200km with the car since swopping the loom...you
can't ride 200km with a 100AH battery without the dynamo
charging right???
Thanks.. I'm pulling my hair out on this kind of stuff just
before a long trip....

This is what I have fitted...is that a dynamo or an
alternator...we just call it a dynamo over here.
I'll take a look at the wiring tonight and I hope to have a new
battery by then so I can test the voltage.
Hope to talk to you tonight Toby, and thanks a lot!
