Help - diff stuck after half shaft broke

Half shaft removed, but the nasty broken bit is still in the
diff and stopping me getting the bastard thing out. Any tips
please?
Alsl, in case you were wondering, it is not very nice working
outside in this pissawfull rain.

Have you knocked the broken bit inwards until it hits the pin?
Then it may clear. There used to be a tool available with a
magnet on to extract the broken bit.

However, sailor beware. If you end-up having to bray the stub
from the other side, pay mind to the fact that I once did (and
don't supposed I was either the first or last) and ended-up
cracking one of the gears.
I didn't notice, re-assembled and then five minutes down the
road it all went hand-grenade inside, popping a hole in the
diff-pan...WAP-WAP-WAP-WAP-WAAHHHHH!

Thank you gentlemen. I have just looked outside again and there
is a river running down the road. Fortunately my "drive" is made
of stone, so the river soaks away quickly and discomfort is
caused by lying on said stones (2 " ) and the constant stream of
water running off the landrover onto which ever bits I have
sticking out, and that there isn't really enough room under said
vehicle to do much.
However, I am wondering whether to extract the other half shaft
and try to encourage the broken bit back into the axle tube, if
I can get the diff back into place and have a long enough drift.
Learing from your experience Drew, I might actually use my
"spare" diff if I ever get the bastard old one out.

You cant get a normal drift all the way through from the other
side as there is a pin in the way.I used a piece of metal rod
that they use to wrap tape round on building sites and road
works ,got the grinder out and shaped it till it went
through.The tool using a magnet I couldnt see working as it
would have to be really strong and would stick to everything.

I feel your pain. Every time this week that I have tried to
finish off some welding on Nelson, it's absolutely pissed it
down. I got one 10 minute let up in the rain on Tuesday and the
welder ran out of gas. :banghead I finish work early today, but
as usual it's absolutely pissing it down out there again!
Keep at it though, I'm sure you'll get it sorted!

Got the bastard thing out. Small crow bar. :smile1
Even got the broken bit out as well. Now off to land rover
centre for gaskets so I can put it all back.
and the rain has eased off (a bit)

The magnet on end of stick used to be available from x-eng.
Can't see it on their website. They are a very friendly and
helpful company although a lot of their products are for lesser
Landrover's.
