       Changing a propshaft UJ
By: Hairyvike Date: June 28, 2012, 5:22 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
....as I was re-doing this uj last night, I thought I'd take a
few pictures and sling up a how to for any that might need it
...first remove the propshaft and thoroughly clean around the
bearing caps and circlips before starting, also mark the yokes
with either a dot or two of paint or scribe some marks to ensure
that when you re-assemble the yokes you end up with them exactly
as they were originally - failure to do this can throw the prop
right out of balance and cause loads of lovely unwanted
vibrations and premature failure of your new uj....
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0001.jpg[/img]
...next remove the 4 circlips using circlip pliers (if they're
old and grotted in, a squirt or two of wd40 works wonders)
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0002.jpg[/img]
....next put the assembly in a vice, and using a 19mm socket or
similar, press the first bearing cap in towards the spider in
       the centre of the joint
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0003.jpg[/img]
....then add a 1" 1/4 or similar sized socket to the other side
of the joint and continue pressing until the joint will move no
       further
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0004.jpg[/img]
....remove the sockets, and using a pair of pliers/ mole grips/
your teeth, extract the bearing cap that is now standing proud
       of the joint
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0005.jpg[/img]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0006.jpg[/img]
....by pushing the spider towards the now capless part of the
joint you should be able to manoeuvre the opposite cap out and
separate the first part of the joint.....this can be a pain at
       times!
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0008.jpg[/img]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0009.jpg[/img]
...now start on the other 2 caps in the same manner as
before....press the caps though with your sockets
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0010.jpg[/img]
....remove the now proud cap, as before
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0005.jpg[/img]
...and manoeuvre the spider out fully....give the yokes a good
clean up and ensure that there are no burrs in the cap holes
before attempting to fit your new uj
....take your new joint and remove one of the bearing caps from
       it
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0011.jpg[/img]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0015.jpg[/img]
...put a dab of grease into the cap, and spread it around the
inside with your finger being careful to avoid dislodging the
needle rollers within.....this grease will help to keep the
rollers in position as you re-assemble the joint
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0016.jpg[/img]
....now do the same with the opposite cap to the one that you've
       just greased.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
....manoeuvre the capless arms of the spider into your yoke, and
gently press (by hand) the now greased caps into either end of
the yoke....ensuring that they are square to the holes as you do
       so
....now put he yoke into your vice and GENTLY press the caps in
until they are flush....make sure that as you press them in the
spider remains central....take your time with this and it'll be
       a doddle
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0017.jpg[/img]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0018.jpg[/img]
...once the caps are in flush you can then add your trusty 19mm
socket to the vice to press one of the caps in further....do
this VERY carefully and press it until you can see the circlip
retaining groove is clear of the cap
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0019.jpg[/img]
.....once this is done, fit the circlip in that groove
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0020.jpg[/img]
...then turn the joint round and press in the other cap GENTLY
until you can fit its circlip as well
...now remove the other two bearing caps and grease them as
before to ensure that your needle rollers will stay happily in
       place.......
....now manoeuvre the capless arms into place into your prop
ENSURING THAT THE PREVIOUS MARKS YOU MADE LINE UP!!!
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0021.jpg[/img]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0026.jpg[/img]
...hmmm...the picture above should show my scribe marks, but
this bloody camera is being a twat tonight.....never mind!
       :banghead
....now gently fit your bearing caps by hand, again ensuring
that they are square to the yoke.....pop the prop into the vice
and GENTLY press the caps in until flush
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0022.jpg[/img]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0023.jpg[/img]
....next add your 19mm socket and press one of the caps in
further, again until you can fit its retaining circlip
       [IMG]
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0024.jpg[/img]
....turn it around and press in the remaining cap and fit its
       circlip.......job nearly done.....
....now search around for 30 mins for the bag that contained the
joint and retrieve the grease nipple from within......turn the
yoke round till you find the nipple hole and screw it
in....don't over-tighten it as the nipples are fairly fragile
and will snap if you get too heavy handed with 'em...
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0027.jpg[/img]
....finally take your grease gun and give the joint a good
       seeing to....
  HTML http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c396/hairyvike/UJ/DSCF0028.jpg[/img]
....now refit your prop and go and have a cuppa.....hope this
       was helpful ;D
