       2010 a Czech odyssey
       By: mr.scruff Date: January 7, 2012, 12:02 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Here are some pictures of our mega-fantastic trip to see Jan
(1960SeriesII) and his event, the "Birmabright Weekend" at Kutna
Hora in the Czech republic. It's very long so be warned!
As you may, or may not, have seen in the other thread, a chap in
CZ by the name of Max had last week bought a SIII on Ebay and
wondered if anyone would bring it over. Jon aka landyboy jumped
at the chance and after some dramas getting insurance, it was
collected from Oxfordshire on Thursday morning. Jon was
travelling up with my co-pilot, Jim, and after rebuilding the
carb at the side of the road they rocked up at my place of work
at about half six. The run from Oxford was the furthest the 109
had been in one hit for years.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9211.jpg
Bertha, as a besotted Jon had already named her, seemed
generally OK apart from a few areas of concern on the chassis...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9213.jpg
After faffing around for a bit we headed off, having arranged to
meet Fentiger at Brampton Hut. He was bringing us a pair of
tyres which weren't bald and a spare carb, in case the running
problems returned. Being the legend he is, he also bought along
a mirror to fit and some spares like fanbelts n' that. What a
       star!
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9228.jpg
There was a slight fettling session
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9240.jpg
       While Jon found some "decorations"
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9229.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9243.jpg
We soon hit the road and after several boring hours, arrived at
       Harwich...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9255.jpg
...where Stig and Strang had been waiting in the pub for us to
       arrive.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9248_1.jpg
On the ferry we were happy to find ourselves in the company of
some like-minded classic vehicle enthusiasts with similar,
       Midlands-produced exotica.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9264.jpg
After finding the bar and toasting Joskin (several times), we
headed to our cabins for some shuteye. When we woke up, we were
       here...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9266_1.jpg
And soon hit the unsuspecting Dutch roads! This Dutch man in an
Escort was pleased to see our convoy.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9288-1.jpg
We used the first service station for a quick check-over.
Obviously this picture is a mock-up and in no way at all were we
fixing a fuel leak and a loose propshaft.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9303.jpg
Back on the road there was some 109 jousting, as 'Team Bertha'
tried to upstage the mighty Nissan-powered 'Dougal'. The 3.3's
awesome torque and the driving skillz of TEH STIG were clearly
the winning combination, but 10/10 for effort Jon (and almighty
       backfires)
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9308.jpg
Meanwhile, over in 2.25-diesel-world we were enjoying a genuine
100km/h cruise (until we crossed the German border and found
       some hills)
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9310.jpg
We had regular stops to feed Bertha, PRX and ourselves (Dougal
got from Manchester to somewhere in mid-Germany before needing
fuel) and as the temperature climbed, we ditched the door-tops
in a poor attempt at some hetrovering (and to try and avoid
       being cooked alive)
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9317.jpg
Apart from possibly causing a terriorist panic at Leipzig
airport when Bertha backfired in the underpass below it, things
were going well and, eventually, we crossed the border into the
       Czech Republic...!!
To celebrate we found a McDonalds, however Dougal obviously
didn't approve and his rear lights failed.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9324.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9343.jpg
The clever folk did something and got them working whilst I took
some fuzzy pictures, and we were soon on the move once more. CZ
is bloody hilly and according to the thingy on my sat nav, we
climbed to about 2500ft above sea level in a pretty short
distance. We also encountered some rain and several long
tunnels. It was in one of these that Bertha backfired with such
vigour that I felt it through my steering wheel. At this point I
was also laughing so hard I had to remove my glasses as they
       were filling with tears.
After passing through Prague we entered some very dark
countryside and eventually found Hutna Kora, rocking up at about
2am and being greeted by Jan, friends and the very excited new
       owner of Bertha, Max.
That's him, here in the funny hat, the next morning.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9350.jpg
He slept in it that night with his wife and a female work
colleague (?) and seemed well pleased with his new purchase.
With breakfast in the site pub (oh yeah!) undertaken we had a
look round at some of the other motors there. A lot were
ex-British, like this nice 86 with a V8 in it. The LWT was too
       but more of that later.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9351.jpg
We met the little brother to Karl's "Bugeye"!
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9379.jpg
And of course met up with Xander, seen here chewing the fat
       before we went laning.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9380.jpg
Jan led us off laning and what a fantastic set of lanes they
were! Here we are leaving the site...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9383.jpg
...where a few more local folks joined us. This 6 cylinder was
       well nice.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9384.jpg
Jon was able to have some 'Dougal time'
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9386.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9392.jpg
       First stop in some woods.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9409.jpg
One for Phil G. This was ace!
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9414_1.jpg
Some yoofs hurling abuse at me

Jan's Series II - it is as lovely as it looks in pics
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9430.jpg
I let Jim and Jon take PRX on the laning trip. Here Jim does an
impression of a 2.25 diesel whilst Jon is just being Jon.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9437.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9441_1.jpg

       For Parksy
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9444.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9447_1.jpg
Stig remembered that we had a little piece of Tommy with us...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9474_1.jpg
We saw lots of old rear-engined Skodas, here is one going quite
       fast.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9497_1.jpg
I think this used to be one (is it a Skoda?)
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9518_1.jpg
A few almighty claps of thunder...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9529_1.jpg
...as we entered a nice forest section. Felt a bit sorry for the
'shinies' but fair play, no-one stopped or complained about
       scratches.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9535_1.jpg
       Then the rain came
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9543.jpg
And Strang n' Stig got a bit wet. I chickened out and ran for
the safety of my 3/4 tilt
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9550.jpg
Next we headed to a nice river crossing.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9551.jpg
       Jan...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9553.jpg
       Stig...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9562.jpg
       Xander...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9572.jpg
       Max...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9627_1.jpg
       Landyboy   ...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9589.jpg
Although I tried to be cross at the potential engine-distruction
it was hard not to nearly wee laughing.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9671_1.jpg
       Next up was some MUD
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9676.jpg
Xander's road tyres made for some "interesting" handling
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9680_1.jpg
..and at times he struggled for grip. Luckily Grandpa Stig was
       on hand
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9687.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9691_1.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9692_1.jpg
After heading back to camp, we then took off for a meal at a
local pub where we rapidly discovered that the local beer was A.
cheap and B. terrifyingly easy to consume quickly.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9718.jpg
The next day, after a lengthy breakfast and general monging-out
period, Jan took us on a sight seeing tour of the lovely Kutna
Hora. Naturally I was excited by the sight of yet more Skodas.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9721_1.jpg
We spied Bertha prowling the town
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9725_1.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9752.jpg
       For Matty Skoze
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9753.jpg
You can imagine my excitement at this
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9756.jpg
       Bones...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9779.jpg
Back at the campsite we packed down our tents and tried to work
out how the fug Stig's folded up.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9792_1.jpg
Then we made room for Jon, who had bid a tearful farewell to
       Bertha.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9796_1.jpg
With goodbyes said and hands shook, we were away...!
With Xander leading, we sped (?!) off towards the border,
entering Germany in late afternoon and arriving at a nice
campsite where he had stayed the week before. One pub was open
with what I can only imagine was a German lock-in, anyway the
landlord was a top bloke and put up with our chatting and
       drinking.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9814_1.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9817_1.jpg
Off again. Xander struggled to keep up at all times (this is a
       big lie)
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9825-1.jpg
The Stig in drifting action!! OMG etc
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9833-1.jpg
He was obviously "in the zone" as we were heading for....
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9830.jpg
       THE RING
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9838.jpg
With supercars, superbikes and lots of knobs on the track I
wussed out, but Xander and Jon didn't...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9839.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9846.jpg
Whilst they unhitched the caravan, the rest of us drove to a
vantage point and found some parking.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9852.jpg
And waited for possibly one of the golden moments in OLLR
       history....
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9859.jpg
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9863.jpg
The crowd loved it - it was amazing!
All too soon it was time to make tracks for the ferry and we
headed back to the Hook for another night's kip, before landing
       at Harwich early this morning.
Back at work, Stig hitched up a present Jon had collected for
       him earlier in the week.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_9873.jpg
And as a final stupid fling, we let Dougal do some heavy haulin'

seeing these pictures again brings a tear in my eye,
I popped my euroleafing and nürburgring cherry in one weekend 8)
never been the same again after that.
the reason for coming back last year and this year is the
awesome time we had the first time.
So glad this year is on the santa barbera Campsite again aka
better drinks and food + better sanitary.
So be there this year or be GAY!!!!!

Took a while to re-read this, brilliant write-up and obviously a
lot of memories not necessarily concentrating on the meeting
itself. As with all of these big journeys, what happens en route
to and from the destination is usually as memorable as what
       happens there 8)
       Top stuff :)

Had a look at the old forum again and found this report by
Grandpa Stig for the last year's event, dated 1st June 2011 -
couldn't resist moving it on here, had a few spontanneous
