Making progress on my Series 3
By: giftshopduane Date: June 17, 2012, 6:43 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
I made some headway this weekend on my project. Got the body
off, did some reorganizing and took notes of wants and need. I
am getting ready to swap the frame, I should have the motor and
trans out this week, maybe the axles if it goes well.

A bit of transatlantic translation needed. :)
Over here we call the vehicle a motor (from motor car) and the
motor the engine.
The transmission is the whole lot from the back of the engine to
the wheels. We just call the transmission the gearbox (and
transfer box).
And while we're at it, and before you start, we'll have none of
this "hood" nonsense; it's the bonnet and the "fender" is the
bumper.
Whilst you're here make sure you use the Queen's English, old
chap. ;D
Carry on.

I'm looking forward to see the progress on this one, how are you
going to go about replacing the chassis?

Right! I'll do my best. I have been stock piling quality spares
for when I have the chassis sorted. The donor came with a 2nd
truck that had been disassembled and stored for the last 25
years, it has superb body panels and relatively clean paint. I
am only using the motor, gear box and axles off this truck,
along with the bulkhead and top.
Unfortunately the twat who sold it to me had started breaking it
for spares, so it came without wings, overdrive, and front
seats. I have found a set of wings and a perfect set of Deluxe
seat since then. The only issue I have is the good bits I have
are pastel green, the 2 wings are white and teal blue. I had no
intentions of painting, as I wanted to avoid a restoration. But
now I am going to have to do something. Everyone here has either
a pastel green or a pastel blue series, so I am at odds over
what colour to paint it. I am leaning towards Sandstone, or
going so far as painting it a satin version of Bonati grey or
orange. In the meantime I am on the hunt for a nice pair of
wings in pastel green then that will end it, I really want to
keep the patina. That and a good canvas hood, they are hard to
come by here on the used market.
Please translate accordingly!

I am not a native English speaker, but I know that an orange is
piece of fruit. Orange is not a suitable colour for a series
motor. ;-)

Once upon a time my rear cross did what your front dumb irons
are displaying.
Should be a nice interesting rebuild
but remember its against the law on this side of the pond for
tyre fitters to fit white lettering facing out; if they do, they
are generally taken outside, beaten and kicked back in to refit
white lettering inwards ;D Just saying like.

Some other here would just weld that chassis up, from the
pictures it doesn't look too bad (obviously apart from the dumb
irons). However I'm here and not there to see with my own eyes,
but if it is like any other series 3 that I have seen the
chassis will be made with a 70's experimental composite where
they tried to make a substance harder than metal by using cheese
and 2nd hand baked bean cans :smile1
