My digital photographs of our cross-continental jaunt
       By: mr.scruff Date: June 15, 2012, 9:53 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Here are some photos from our recent journeyage to Jan's
Birmabright Weekend in the Czech Republic.
Apart from Strang, who did the sensible thing and got a boat
from Yorkshire and not the arse of Kent, and the van den Berg
brothers who of course live in Holland, we all met up at a
campsite overlooking the white cliffs about 15 mins from the
       ferry port.
Of course despite planning to arrive mid-afternoon, we arrived
in the pitch darkness to find Jim and Lucy with the 86” (ESL)
and Mike109 already pitched up, Mike having already had a
marvellous jaunt from Cornwall across southern England in his
       80”.

Next morning we were up bright and early, and soon made tracks
       for the ferry.

Once off the boat, Munkie’s ambulance needed a bit of attention
       before we could continue.

After Brenda the ambulance had been fettled we set off, bound

The first day was largely boring northern European roads and
going round Brussells, we got stuck in a massive traffic jam.
Here I had a jubilee clip dislodge at very handy moment (not)
and dump most of my coolant, luckily a two-minute stop had us
       back in business again.
At some point we lost Jon, Alex and Frank the 109 and found a
supermarket for much needed food, unfortunately it was shut but
it was a good leg-stretching point.

Munkie’s exhaust ‘repair’ was holding up well…

We eventually arrived at the Eifel Camp to find this lot already
       on the beer.

That night in the campsite bar we had some grub and quite a bit
       of beer.

       DAY TWO
This was Thursday and our target was to get from the Eifel Camp
to Jan’s house in CZ (some 396 miles) without sitting on bastard
       motorways all day.
       Frank woke everybody up.
  HTML http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/248060_10151198888512796_1153539505_n.jpg[/img]
The campsite didn’t allow vehicle tinkering so we found a handy
       layby.
  HTML http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/181394_10151198718157796_1741689781_n.jpg[/img]
Somewhat amazingly a biker stopped who had a 107 Station Wagon
at home! He laughed at our assorted jalopies and went on his
       merry way.
Quickly we realised we would have to hit an Autobahn to have any
chance of getting to Jan’s at a decent hour (we still failed)
and so took advantage of some services to fuel up/tighten
fanbelts/throw away split open batteries that were boiling over.

Dutch Hell’s Angels gave us several drive-bys

As we passed from Germany ([George Smiley] Their bit [/George
Smiley]) into the Czech Republic, the weather turned notably
       gloomy
       [IMG]
  HTML http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/283676_10151198723082796_1517757130_n.jpg[/img]
In fact, it bloody pissed down, and it was pitch-black by the
time we rocked up to Jan’s place for a welcome BBQ and a beer or
three. Here we also met Stefan
       [IMG]
  HTML http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/600357_10151198723907796_1839839336_n.jpg[/img]
Brenda the ambumulance had shat her battery and so Jan took
Munkie to a local car spares shop to buy a massive mutha of a
new one which cost 2,000 CZquids (about £62).

Jan then led the way to Kutna Hora, where the Birmabright
       Weekend is based.

Unfortunately, Jan’s Series One suffered an evil electrical
demon and required some quick repairs, after Stig towed him off
       the main road.

noted we were in good company.

The party animals – Xander, Mike, Alex and Jon – went into
downtown Kutna Hora to check out the clubbing scene while the
rest of us drank the night away at the campsite.
The next morning Mike’s 80 had gained an addition.

       SUNDAY
I was really looking forward to today, we went to the National
Agricultural Museum which was freakin GREAT

I will put a lot more pics from the museum in Anoraks section.
       Brilliant place!
From the museum we decided to head back into (the former) East
Germany, as we were all running a bit low on CZquids.
Bec and I had previously found a campsite near Zwickau at a
place called Legenfeld. We arrived in the pissing rain after a
100-odd mile journey to be met by a lovely little site…
       [IMG]

…with a narrow gauge railway running round it.

Again, more pics coming up soon in ‘Anoraks’.
The next morning we headed for downtown Zwickau. This is where
the famous Trabant car was built and we hoped to visit the
August Horch Museum, based in part of the old factory. However
it isn’t open on Mondays so we made do with a wander around the
grounds. At this point we said goodbye to Strang, Xander and
       Mathieu.

Tribute to Trabant done, we hit the road again bound for a
       campsite we’ve used before.
Which was shut! Well, not shut but extremely unfriendly to us
       Land Rovering and tenting sorts.
Not to worry, we found a cracker not far away.

The owner of the site was a proper nice bloke, and invited us
into what appeared to be his front room for some beers and to
watch what I can only assume was a German version of Inspector

The next day (Tuesday) we hit the road again with the aim of
getting within three hours or so of Dunkirk for the boat home on
       Wednesday.
Some great driving roads though Germany and into Belgium.

And we found a handy layby to have lunch in.

We eventually found a campsite just over the Dutch border,
really nice place and where we did a bit of TLC – I adjusted my
clutch, Jim and Munkie bolted Brenda’s alternator back on.

Then, Wednesday morning was the final blat to Dunkirk. We would
have been on the same boat as the others, but Brenda threw her
       fan belt off.

We caught the 6pm ferry and before we knew it were sat in
traffic on the M25. Six hours to get home!
A brilliant week with fantastic company.
