TDI starting problems

My 300 tdi keeps taking ages to start as it doesnt get fuel for
ages, once its got fuel its fine, leave it a a few hours and it
does it again. I'm thinking the fuel is draining out the line
into the tank and its taking a while to get back up again any
ideas? :confused:

Almost certainly an air leak, allowing the Diesel to drain back.
You haven't changed the fuel filter, have you? If you have, make
sure it's tight, and if it's one with a drain in the bottom,
make sure that's tight.
Tweak up all the joints - top of fuel filter, lift pump,
injector pump, including the spill pipes from injectors back to
the injector pump.

Checked all the hoses for leaks and its fine....

The problem is, air molecules are smaller than Diesel molecules,
so you might not see any evidence or wetness.
When you say you've checked them, have you given each joint a
tweak with the spanner?
Otherwise, it's down to replacing each pipe/joint in turn until
the problem goes away :(
An old-school trick was to slather loads of grease around every
joint in turn until you hit the right one, but that's a long job
when it takes a few hours for each check.
You could always slather all the joints in one go to prove if
that's the problem or not.

All my connections are rubber hoses and clips should I be using
the plastic fuel lines with olives etc?

I'm with OVS, check the lift pump, also your pick up pipe in the
tank - if it's got a pinhole in it above the level of the fuel
it will be a biatch to start.

No - rubber's fine as long as it's proper Diesel rubber hose.
'Nitrile'?
Some rubber deteriorates in Diesel - ask me how I know ::)
If your rubber sections are long enough, I'd cut off the last
inch of each end and remake the joints.
Also, make sure you're using the proper size clips - tightening
a worm drive clip that's too big onto a pipe can cause it to
deform, which could let air in.
Of course, I could be wrong, so check out what OVS & scruff say
as well :thumbs:

Thanks guys, ill check the connections again and I might fit a
check valve if the problem persists

What OVS said, lift pump. Less than £20 on ebay. Might as well
get a spare at the same time
