Part identification...... Found in my sump!
DIR By: seriesewan

---------------------------------------------------------
had the sump off last night as i was changing the oil & its been
leaking for a bit ( quite how the heck it has leaked as it took
3 hours of scraping & levering to get the thing off! ) anyway
once it was off i found this inside!
Engine runs fine & always has, this is the first time i have had
the sump off it ( had it 3 years now ) & the big beefy magnets
i keep in / on the oil filter have never picked up any abnormal
amounts of swarf so i am assuming it has been in there for a
long time, I would also assume that something like that would go
with a bang in the engine - again never heard anything like that
from it in my ownership
Any ideas what it could be? its got a brass back with a
machined groove in it & some stampings which i have redrawn &
photographed, looks to have done the rounds in the sump for a
fair time, as its got heavy deposits of clag en-grained onto it

Looks like they were a crank thrust washer pair. Do you think
they looked like this when new :

Normally brass / bronze appearance.

Surprising that they have come adrift as should be pretty well
locked in position. If you grip the crank pulley, can you push
it in and out of the engine at all?

Yes i would say they would look like that when new, the ends
are tapered in the same way,
not got any noticeable play on the front pulley wheel though,
eurghh i get the feeling that this may result in removing my
engine! :banghead

thinking about it, the clutch will be loading it wont it? i need
someone to hold the clutch in & then try waggling..
its a 5 MB engine, is this duplicated anywhere along the crank?

Is there any way of renewing this with the crank in situ?

It's a little while since I had a 5mb engine in bits so my
memory may be a bit rusty, but I think:
There is one pair of thrust washers only, and they run on the
journal at centre of the crank. (i.e. between big ends 2 and 3).
I'm not sure you can replace them with the engine fitted - I
suspect it's possible, particularly if you slacken all the main
bearing caps off so there is some free play in the crank.

aha so i will be able to get more clearance on the crank if i
release the main bearings :) so would that leave teh crank held
in position with just the con- rods & the clutch?
worht a punt i guess if nothing else,

Don't release them altogether! In fact I would not take the risk
of doing it without proper examination of all the parts. The
thrust washers are there to take considerable forces and if it
has been running for a while sans washers damage will have been
done.

They can be replaced with the crank in situ and no need to
slacken all the M/B's off just remove the one affected by washer
location.
The pertinent question is why they fell out.
