My father ran a successful wedding car hire business until quite
recently. Due to the unfortunate actions of his business
partner and her father, its been ruined.
Anyway. To cheer ourselves up and invest in the future we
decoded to buy a new car for a new business and move on.
Shamelessly copied from another forum and apologies in advance
for the crapness of some pictures, but they werent too keen on
photography, but there were some lovely cars there...
Couldnt think where to put it, so I'll put it here.
I went up North to look at a car yesterday with my dad.
We drove north in my old mans little Audi...

We stopped in some really bad services...

We got where we were going and were impressed. Muchly.

       DS420/Daimler Limousine. Close though. ;-)
Lovely cars. Unbeatable for weddings. 7 passenger seats means
a lot of bridesmaids can get shifted about at once. Once we're
a bit more settled, I'll start a thread about the fleet.
Just thought that some of the old iron around that showroom
       might float some boats.

I keep thinking about the potential of a wedding car business as
I am getting pissed off with the IT world as I get older...
Do the figures stack up for a reasonable living?

Thanks for the comments... ...Can you make a living?
Nope. Not really in our case. We think of it as a self
financing hobby. We get to see some cool cars, own some cool
cars, mess about with them and then stick them into the middle
of someones big day in time for the photos. Its a nice way to
spend an afternoon, getting paid to lope about in silly cars.
If you really want to run it as a business, I suppose its
possible. The company we were at will have 35 cars out tomorrow
at an average of £300 plus VAT per car. So ther is money to be
made, its just the scale of return on investment to worry about.
Sounds good. The above numbers mean taking in 12 grand gross in
one weekend. But think of the overheads (maintenance and think
on that the season is May to September, but overheads don't
       stop.
Tax, maintenance, test, maintenance, fuel, drivers, storage,
advertising, maintenance, private hire insurance, maintenance,
       rates. etc etc.
You can make a living at it, an extension into other functions
would increase your earning potential, but to do anything other
than weddings and funerals (yeah, I know some people think they
are one and the same) you will then need an operators licence,
CRB checked licensed drivers and the cars have to be licensed
for use and regularly VOSA tested too. A bit like taxis
       really.
I do love the 4.2 straight sixes though...

Thanks for that... You have confirmed the hurdles and hoops I
could see... Lovely car by the way, and where is that emporium
       of old iron??
Like you the thought of having a self funding fleet of old toys
still beckons at some point in my life... Just have to look at
other options to fill in the down time... As the wife is an
events organiser, get her involved in wedding planning etc, just
need to find some pikeys now..!!! Advertising should be cheap
though - an old washing machine at the end of the drive will
       bring us potential clients...

Wedding planning is a good one, but your area has a lot to do
with what market you will available to you. Wedding planners
don't seem to do good business up my way (NE England) and the
market for cars differs by area too.
There are different people to punt towards, some folk want the
2012 plate Rolls footballers wives stuff, some people want the
quirky VW's, some people even go for stretch limo's. But most
people just want something pretty looking, classic-ish,
white/ivory and most importantly: on time.
The huge showroom we bought our latest from is in Glasgow, it
couldn't be supported in a smaller place. It would have to be
working out of a large city. There are too many people like my
dad in the provincial areas running at break even for a model on
       that scale to support itself.
