20 Spitfire Aircraft to Return to Britain

For those that missed this interesting news, twenty Spitfire
aircraft buried in Burma during the Second World War are to be
repatriated to Britain. Buried there in transport crates, they
were waxed, wrapped in greased paper and their joints tarred.
They will be in near perfect condition!

Well let's hope so, but is it really likely? What are the
chances that the crates will have rotted and collapsed, and the
contents succombed to damp so all that's left is a crushed mass
of aluminium and some lumps of solid rust?
Will the finder reveal his true colours by putting some of them
up for auction before starting the excavation?

Indeed. There have been claims akin to this before. I'll believe
it when they turn up at the docks. Besides, no mention was made
of the engines; 20 RR Merlins are going to be hard to find and
expensive to buy.

Apparently the transport cases have been drilled down to and
checked, the aircrafdt found to be in reasonably good condition.
They are complete, knocked down for transport, aircraft. They
were packed for transport by sea (probably as deck cargo) and
should have resisted damp pretty well. They were never unpacked
on arrival
Somebody did say that they would need entirely re-riveting to
make them airworthy

Not having seen any pics yet on the net, I'll believe that when
I see it. :confused:
Anyone remember the buried Plymouth in Tulsa? - right fuck up

of rust fine example of an American automobile out of the ground

Lady Belvedere was interred in a concrete box, however, the city
planners rerouted the main sewers, and paid no heed to the
Lady's resting place. Rumour has it that Boyd Coddington
(American HotRod) took the secrets of the "refresh" to his own
grave.

Would these have had Griffon engines by that time, rather than
Merlins?
I know there are quite a few 'interesting' stored parts in the
Rolls Royce Heritage Collection in Derby.

griffon engines were for tanks were tehy not?!?! same block but
sans supercharger & tuned/geared for better torque at lower rpm

Later marks of Spitfire had the Griffon as did the Avro
Shackleton and Fairey Firefly amongst others.
