The Nameless 88 (also know as Project 88)

Thought I'd start a thread for the project 88.
1st off was the initial 'Can you come and have a look for me?'
call. So I trawled off to have a look at this forlorn looking
88.

A short test drive round the Edenhall trials course saw that the
2.25 diseasel engine was sweet, the gearbox was good and the
tyres needed some looking at.....
A trailer was borrowed and Project 88 was collected and dragged
back to my place.

Next was a bit of looking, head scratching and decision making.
What will become of Project 88? A plan was hatched that involved
a truck cab, 90 diffs and a 200tdi engine.
Before all that fun stuff though, Project 88 needs to be made
roadworthy so out came the welder. Approximately 16 feet of
fresh steel has been welded in to the chassis along with new
front dumbirons.
Lots of painting too as marine blue is the colour for a Series
III :thumbs:

Some HD sills/rock sliders were fabricated and fitted. A few
welding errors on my part meant one sill was chopped about and
re-welded on several occasions......

Both axles were pulled off, the springs refurbished, axles
painted and early 90 diffs were fitted. A new rear diff pan was
also welded in.

Also swapped the wheels over to Wolf rims, currently shod with
235/85 16 BFG Tracedge tyres.
There has been a full rear end rewire, brakes have been stripped
and new cylinders fitted, new brake pipes run and the system has
been bleed through. It just requires a little adjustment and
we'll be 100% happy. New shocks fitted.
Still to do is a bit of fettling to the rad panel which has
started to succumb to the dreaded tin worm. I will have to
borrow a working Mig welder to sort that as my trusty stick will
just blow holes clean through it.
So this is how it stands at the moment. Soon be ready for the
MoT and another Series III back on the road.

Speedy work- all rock sliders should go body colour like that

What's the advantage of 90 diffs, are they easy to source and
fit? Do they fit the standard rover axle with free wheeling
hubs?

Poor mans overdrive basically. Ups the gearing. Good if you have
the added grunt of a 200tdi but may be a bit tall geared for a
standard 2.25 engine. They are easily sourced and they do fit
straight in to the Rover axle.
