Good stuff there. It would inevitably be an 88" as that's me but
lowering it..... Errr.

I like your thinking there Dave, some kind of KERRs on it could
help

Engine out, fuel tanks out, electric motor and a shed load of
batteries, there are a couple that have been done like this in
the US and IIRC the range is more than your 50 miles per day.
Charge up overnight on cheap rate electricity and Bob's your
uncle.

It had crossed my mind Doug! I hope I know more about
electrickery than this mechanical stuff after all.
It's the price of the batteries that baulks a bit. What about 2
motors one strapped to each diff? Unsprung weight would be an
arse but still.

someone somewhere has already stuffed a 2litre tomcat (i think
that was the engine) matched to a lt77 into an 88" Series (might
have been a forum member)
might be worth hunting him down to see if he tried any economy
runs
as already suggested reduce it to 2wheel drive and you'll lose
the weight of the transfer box, front diff and associated
gubbins
i'd suggest a truck cab and load cover as being a reasonable
combination i did make a frame up and carried my spare
horizontally on it under the load cover leaving the load bed
empty, my 3/4 tilt has increased the drag on my 88" but it is
tatty and very flappy
200tdi with disco diffs, 7.50 tyres and overdrive used to see me
regularly hit 35-36 to the gallon on a run, as already said the
prima is reckoned to hit 40mpg in an 88"
smoothing the underside of the engine/gearbox bay might help to
improve things
or you could always get the kids in the back operating
treadmills to power it, a bit like mouse wheels but kid sized

is the best one I have seen so far; yes
those batteries that he uses must have cost a packet, BUT I'd be
looking at the life cost of the whole thing (let's say 2000
cycles @ 90 miles per cycle is 180000 miles - and at 50 miles
per day that's 3600 days, or 13.8 years of working days). To
charge it fully would cost between £6 and £7 at current energy
prices (roughly the same as a proper gallon of petrol), which I
think means to run it would be costing you the equivalent of 90
mpg. Oh and that one in my link is still a proper 4 wheel drive
88" ;-)

I do like the idea of an electric LR, but I'm not so keen on
being subject to a charging point how about a small diesel
generator to recharge.
I have a ten year old article in a comic I found the other day
about an electric IIa and it does appeal. Of course if you want
to go full on, then how about a motor per wheel for the
ultimate in traction control :) ( I think I'm heading off
beyond the realms of ollr again)
Not so keen on being subject to a charging point though, so how
about a small dedicated diesel generator on board to charge?

My Prima went from Wigan to Longleat on a half tank if I
remember that worked out at 52 mpg.

I'm well impressed with Primas. Mine, on standard diffs with no
overdrive and 750s is pissing past 40mpg and I worked out on the
run back from Germany over the past two days it has done
43-point-something; not bad when that was foot to the floor
trying to keep up with RR-diffed and overdrived Tdis and that.
