50mpg on Derv/ 30mpg on LPG....possible?

An odd hypothetical question that's sat in my noddle while we've
been painting the outside of the house today.
Ignoring any loyality whatsoever to Land Rover's power plants
and gearboxes if required I've been wondering if there's anyway
to make an 88" beat the cost of public transport for my commute
to work.
Currently I avoid the veal calf like train as I car share but
circumstances may change and while an autoshite of some sort is
more than doable my commute is a bit of a rough one and I
despise working on 99% of cars. Certainly anything with a
monoque I avoid.
So 50miles a day over a mix of winding A roads and rough fell
roads. I know with a bit of fabbing an 88" could ride and
handle reasonably but to beat the train in terms of folding
stuff such a motor would have to pull off a rather eyebrow
raising 30mpg if fed with gas and about 50mpg on Diesel.
Veg Oil is like rocking horse poo round here so isn't a goer but
LPG is available in quite a few places so not a problem.
Assuming the gearbox would get the heave ho for something else
I'm wondering what sort of engine (without going to ultra modern
VAG stuff diesel wise) would be able to pul this off and still
make progress that can only be tracked by theodolite.
Some sort of 1800cc jap or vauxhall motor mated to a 5 speed
box? Not being John Eastwood I wouldn't be caning it all the
time ;-) and would fit it with modern sensible tyres.
Worryingly :gay: this maybe but better to run a leafer with a
modern pacemaker than some autoshite. A caged up Pug 205 1400
on gas would be fun but I couldn't be arsed going back to the
days of changing ball joints or bushes every month and
wondering what random clunk is going to appear today. Also you
do tend to get run off the road quite a lot by tards so cars in
general susally don't fare well eventually. Statisically the
odds are better in a Land Rover!

I think it is more than possible to achieve and without
resorting to really modern engines (which actually don't seem
for the most part to be an awful lot better in economy terms
than engines of ten twelve years ago). I know I keep mentioning
it but an l series rover will get 50mpg for example.
As important will be driving style and making the series
reasonably aerodynamic - whether a hard top or truck cab is
better for example, also minimal rolling resistance from tyres,
panel gaps and smoothing the frankly box like silhoette. None of
which needs to turn it into a streamliner, just make the best of
a proper series look.
I would probably take a leaf (dyswidt) out of the sj boys book
and look at a 1.7 vauxhall engine/ box with a divorced t-case.
Whether it would work I don't know but that would be a start.

for ease of conversion how about the discovery mpi engine and
gearbox.
would think.with a good gas kit that would touch 30mpg in a
series.
or a rover k series (power wise got a tdi matched if not for
torque) ... maybe even the v6 used sensibly would I think give
30mpg ... be hard to fit though
I doubt an l series will do 50mpg ... we had one in a car and it
would do 50 on a reasonable trip, on fell roads and with the
weight and drag of a series ... I very much doubt it
I would go for late 90's or early 00's for a balance of
simplicity and economy. later things get more complicated for
little economy benefit.

I was thinking about the options a "divorced" t case (good name
for them) gives you. Ford Zetec mated to Type 9 gearbox mated to
such a t case.
Not sure 4wd is really needed as well really. (Cough) Transit
back axle? (I can see EFB calling).

I've heard of people with Perkins Prima engines in otherwise
unaltered series motors getting 40mpg. So if you were to bolt a
Prima to some sort of Rover (P4?) 2wd gearbox and a normal LR
back axle with an appropriate diff, rip out the front diff, half
shafts and prop shaft then you're going to be able to get over
40 as there's less weight to drag about and less friction in
turning a front diff and transfer box.
Plus road tyres to save a bit of fuel and a truck cab or full
canvas to keep the weight down. ???
Other weight-saving things could be parabolic springs and even
swapping all the glass for perspex?

To be clear I wasn't suggesting an l-series as an option in this
case (although I do think it could be a good one in others) but
just to show that even an engine of that age can acheive similar
real world figures to the ultramodern stuff with all that
infernal elctrickery.
Divorced t-cases are an Americanism - I'm showing up my deviant
interests in some pretty unsuitable ollr vehicles now.heresy a
I have a suspicion that a hard top could be better for MPG -
because it shows a smoother profile for the air to pass over,
but that is just a thought exercise so no proof (although I know
someone who has swapped from truck cab to hard top and is
recording economy)
Heresy alert .Lowering it might also help and a smoother
underside so lowering blocks to bring it down an inch or two?
( I can see this gathering speed towards the EFB)

Weight is arguably the most important factor where fuel economy
is concerned. You can go with all the technology you want, the
reason a Routemaster does 11 mpg and a modern decker does 5 mpg
is 7.3 tonnes vs nearly 12 tonnes. Trim as much of that off as
you can and it'll help significantly. Titanium chassis and axles
perhaps... ;-)

Bit random, but what about a 2.0 petrol in series 1, running LPG
via either EFI or at least a BLOS carb?
People claim getting on for 30mpg on petrol for the 2.0 IOE
engines with conventional carbs driven steadily. I'd think there
should be gains to be had that might yield a real world regular
figure in the late 20s on gas if one were to build as light as
possible a vehicle (topless 80"?) and use magic (or at least
digital electricery) to control the spares and fuel delivery
(maybe a megasquirt unit).
I'm planning on going this route with my 2.6 petrol, and reckon
that if I combine this with a prolong period of restraint of the
right boot, I may well have the cheapest and most powerful
standard petrol engined IIA on the block...

How about a 1.9 pug xud engine with a 2wd lt77 from an ldv pilot
van?

I think it's now at terminal velocity and the brakes have
failed.
