Can you not just put a thin skim of filler on the bulkhead to
fill in the pits?

It's more pimpled than pitted, thinking and looking at it today
not a lot will be visible when the wings and bonnet are on, most
or the roughness is pimples not pits.

a worn 100 grit in angle grinder but take it lightly to only
remove high spots

No paint on today, galv smoothed out a little, seam sealer on so
waiting for it to go off I made a start on removing the 200TDi
from the donor vehicle.
Radiator out all pipes disconnected and a start made on
splitting from the bell housing, most of the bolts and nut's off
the studs that I can see, but I've a horrible feeling that there
will be one at the top of the housing which will be hard to get
at. Am I correct?
Will I need to be smashing the plastic dash open and cutting
through the body work to get at another fastener?

Jack the engine up, remove the engine mounts and lower the
engine, you should then be able to reach down the back to the
bellhousing bolts if you have thin arms. Otherwise it's lots of
extensions over the gearbox from underneath...
