Currently running a breathed on 2.25 Petrol that is dying,
however will be going 300 Tdi after LATP, not because I really
want to, but I have one that is in good condition, known
history, and all the bits needed to swap are there, and its a
choice of stick that in and be able to just about be able to
stick fuel in the Landy, or take it off the road. As and when I
can, she'll be going back to 2.25, but a perfect example.

2 1/4 petrol for me though I am exploring the possibilities of
something a little more economical as it is a daily driver atm.
I am thinking about a strip down and rebuild so may include
another engine whilst im at it!

Good on you Moggy .....BUT id wager once you have enjoyed TDi
powah .....you might think twice .
As ever which engine is best is a unanswerable question ...I
love the 2 1/4 petrol BUT not it's fool consumption ...
And having the 109 with 2 1/4 petrol...Zeb with Transit
powah,Plus Traceys with Tdi I reckon i have a good comparison .
To be honest IF i only pottered about to the shops and back in
the 109 ...petrol all the way
BUT i don't so eventually TDi will be the way it goes as it
makes it much more usable for an everyday vehicle especially
with the LT77 OR possibly an automatic.
As for going back to petrol after Tdi ...Jehhhh Right !!!!!

From going from a knackerd 2.25 petrol to 200 Tdi and with fuel
prices as they are (and going to be, wherever that is), if you
drive it alot then it is a "no brainer". Mine will be in until
the next fad, when we are all trying to bodge in washing machine
motors under the bonnet.
I am still trying to work out where I am going to put all them
batteries in my 80".

I've voted 200tdi, as that's what I've been running for the last
3 years.
That said, I'm hoping a shift from a 200tdi to a 2.6 petrol on
LPG as my daily driver in the next few months.
There isn't much (if any) difference in running costs (I reckon
tdi on 100% veg oil costs me 16.5p/mile, 2.6 on LPG about
17.5p/mile, tdi on pump DERV 21p/mile) and I'm starting to get
rather hacked off by the way that tdi engines wreck stuff - not
just the way they munch driveline bits, but also the way they
shake the rest of the vehicle apart...
Once the 2.6 is up and running reliably, I'm going to be fitting
a 5 speed gearbox to Bitsa... I'm not sure yet which will prove
better as a longterm daily motor... (a lot probably depends on
the relative price and availability of cooking oil vs LPG, and
also how many MPG I can squeeze out of the 2.6).
I suspect I'll end up using the 2.6 for most short to medium
journeys, and the tdi for longer motorway trips, as it's just
got that bit more power to push on in the fast lane...

John,
Honestly it's not the TDi that does the damage .......It's the
driving like a "Twat" ::)

Gassed V8's for a while now and a gassed 2 1/4 before that.
Installing a gas kit was/is easier than an engine swap.
I did once have a diesel series, but it was a mazda lump. The
missus had/has a 4203. Strong but so, so slow.
