leafer insurance for a 17 yr old

A friend of mine is looking to buy a 64 88" for her son as his
first car but the insurance quotes are hideous. Can anyone
recommend a cheap insurance company to try. I realise its not
going to be as cheap as it is for oldies but 2 and a half grand
is ridiculous!
Steve.

Most insurance goes on engine size so a 2.25 will go against the
young uns

NFU - at £1500 you struggle to get better, I found it more
depends on your postcode.

Speaking as someone who has just exited the 17-24 age group...
Firstly, if you are going to insure it, it will have to be 100%
standard. Cover for non standard vehicles driven by under 25s,
particularly if they are only vehicles/daily drivers, is
virtually non-existent. Unfortunately, tdi conversions are out,
even LPG is difficult.
NFU would only take 17-21's if they already do business with
them or their families, they will consider 21-24's on their own
if they have no accidents or points (IIRC they may allow 3
points for a single speeding ticket).
Footman James were one of the best bets for under 25's - BUT
it's very hit and miss if they will take you (I think they have
the largest book of 17-24s with classics, and are under pressure
from the underwriters to reduce the size of this particular
book).
Insurers in general can be quite schizophrenic - I renewed last
month, and shortly before received two letters within a day of
each other - the first one regretted that they were unable to
offer me a renewal quote, and informed me I would need to find
another insurer - the second one (sent a day later, and from
the same firm) offered me a renewal premium of £195...

I'm now 22 and found Adrian Flux the cheapest by a long shot,
and no probs with me being under 25. Though 17 is a different
kettle of fish.
Paid £950 last year (21 just passed) and £530 this year. By far
the cheapest I could find.

The situation is that Equity Red Star, who was the under writer
for Footman James' under 25 policies, no longer wishes to do so.
This means a few other classic car insurers who would insure
under 25s, who were also under written by the same company, will
no longer be able to offer policies to under 25 year olds. This
combined with the postcode lottery means there are a lot of
under 25 year olds who basically will not be able to get a
quotation, let alone afford the insurance.
I counted the number of companies willing to cover me a month or
two back when all this was going on. It came down to about
three, maybe four, companies who were willing to quote me on my
88. At the moment I'm at the mercy of the Admiral group for
insurance on a little eurobox - if the Admiral group changes its
policies with pricing and ups it to the same as all its
competitors, then I'll be priced off the road, literally, as all
the others say £2,500+ for my little 1.25 Fiesta whereas the
Admiral group are in three figures (for now anyway).
I'm 22 by the way.

Not true. At 19, Adrian Flux will cover me for any land rover
engine from a 2.0 petrol through 200TDi's to a 3.5 V8 from a
stagey for the same price. How that works i don't know, but
there is cover out there for modified land rovers with young
drivers...
Write FJ off, i was quoted £1200 6 months a go for the 80",
phoned up again last month and they refused to let me go any
further than my name. They're now adamant they won't take on any
new under 25's.
Just gotta phone around everyone buddy, Flux have been the most
helpful out of anyone, think the quote for me fully comp was
£1700 on my own living in a pretty shit part of essex with the
promise of that halving next year.

I guess that's the postcode lottery at work then, because
they're reluctant to even quote on my 88 and can only offer near
on 2 grand as their best?

The prices you youngsters are quoting are unbelieveable. Surely
it's cheaper to drive without insurance as the fines, should you
get caught, are going to be less than that!
I'm always seeing 'reports from the courts' in the local rag
where someone's been done for driving with no insurance and they
don't seem to get fined more than £500.

Also got mine with Adrian Flux
£850 a year (24 with no claims at that point ... so im probably
going to get raped now :banghead) - all mods declared, business
use, and allot of miles
Could have had it under £400 if Id limited it to 3000 miles with
Lancaster
Car is about £1k a year
