logrover went slabbing today

picked up a 1950's Petter AV single stationary engine and
sawbench recently (been sat in a field for 30+ years, but still
in occasional use), so moved it to the log stockpile today and
tried it out - bit slow and wobbly, but cut some slabs of wood
for a garden bench - and made a good putt, putt,putt noise so
all good fun ;D

i then went home and finished the alsakan mill i've made this
week for my chainsaw, so i'll post a few pics of that shortly.

I made this alaskan mill for my chainsaw this week - it's only
an 18" bar which means the mill will only slab 13" diameter
logs, but that's good enough for me at the moment.

guide plank screwed to top of test log for first cut:

then just use the cut surface for next planks:

and used the Logrover to hold the shrinking log for the final
cut as hard to hold:

now dismantled and ready for painting.
a good day making planks rather than firewood for a change ;D

very nice! i had an alaskan sawmill with a husky 3120 and i
slabbed up some big oak and cedar and made some benches but
found them hard to sell in small quanities plus the amount of
fuel and effort needed to do it made it more of a hobby! It is
also very hard on the saw and i found a ripping chain much
better than standard type. Sold it all a few years ago but i
still have a bench and some cherry planks left. That sawmill
looks nice , a bit dangerous rofl , roller beds for those come
up now and then on the horror of ebay which would be a big
improvement!
All in all some nice toys to play with there! :thumbs:

I would be very careful with that bench trying to rip those
lengths of timber as you havent got a rithing (not sure if
correct spelling) knife which is intended to stop the wood
pinching and gripping on the blade and you also havent got a top
gaurd on the blade either. Not trying to teach granny to suck
eggs or play mr health and safety just like to see every body
enjoy themselves without getting hurt !! :thumbs:

Always like to see the log rover in action ( even if it isn't
actually doing much this time) . Nice bench and interesting
'alaskan'.
I guess you can negate the need for a 'writhing' knife if your
assistant uses some small ,well placed, wedges (when they aren't
taking the evidence) ....I'm certainly no expert but I seem to
recall doing that many moons ago when using an old bench to cut
fence posts and Paul is right, no one wants to see or hear of
any harm done to fellow kind, especially THE log rover owner.
Nice day for it by the looks of it. :thumbs:

yes, yes, and yes...
yes, it should have guards etc - and we did use a wedge when
that big log was going through and the engine bogs/belt slips if
it does pinch - but we will look at the hse aspects now we know
it at least has the ability to cut something (wood or flesh ;-)
).
yes, the Logrover wasn't doing much, just shifting the logs and
acting as an over engineered clamp ::)
yes, it was a nice day most of the time - it did actually snow
for a brief period - you can see it in the black clouds in one
of the pics - that's May in Aberdeenshire...

Great photos! I love seeing Logrover being used, it's got to be
