       My 'new' 1966 shed!
By: RMS Date: January 6, 2012, 8:32 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday, John (Overlander), was good enough to return a favour
and drive me to pick up my 'new' 1966 2A 109".
A lovely drive through the Peak District, skirting Sheffield and
driving through Castleton etc. to Cheadle on the back roads.
Only one fallen tree which took us on a 2 mile detour, and we
had to avoid Woodhead Pass as it was closed for most of the day
       :stars
Lovely drive back as well; John found the TomTom 'Shortest
Route' facility and we drove on loads of tiny lanes, though some
of the very wet hairpins on steep hills proved too much for my
rear tyres, spinning away and going nowhere fast!
Anyhoo - got there and checked it out and it's a reasonably
straight 109", with lights in front panel (but also later S3
       wings with lights!).
  HTML http://www.rmsconsult.co.uk/landy/dey/out1.jpg
It's got a VW straight 6 cyl. Diesel engine nestling under the
bonnet, which was running really well after it had a bit of a
thrashing up some of the Peak District hills; an S3 gearbox
(synchro on 2nd, but weak on 3rd & 4th), and an overdrive (with
extended lever) which whines like a goodun :embarrassed).
  HTML http://www.rmsconsult.co.uk/landy/dey/in1.jpg
Had a quick look around it, and the chassis is untouched and
looks in really good shape, it's got a big Ramsey electric winch
on the front on a very heavy duty winch bumper, and a small
electric winch hoist on the back, on a swing-out arm for loading
       stuff into the back.
  HTML http://www.rmsconsult.co.uk/landy/dey/front2.jpg
  HTML http://www.rmsconsult.co.uk/landy/dey/lift.jpg
Twin batteries (one for the winches) with split charge, and for
some reason, oblong trailer lights mounted high on the back!
It's got some other queer stuff as well ???
Lots of switches on add-on panels which obviously did things at
one time, but will need tracing out.
It's got an S3 heater cobbled on to the bulkhead (really
effective with demister vents around the wiper motors)
There's also a vacuum tank mounted underneath, which has hoses
going to the engine bay (still haven't traced them) and to the
servo (S3 pedal) and a vacuum gauge on the dash which flickers
when you apply the brakes, so it's obviously using the tank.
  HTML http://www.rmsconsult.co.uk/landy/dey/vac.jpg
The rear springs are blowing a bit with rust, so I'll probably
take those apart and clean them up; still plenty of curve so
they should be fine greased up.
  HTML http://www.rmsconsult.co.uk/landy/dey/spring.jpg
Obviously, the hinges will have to be changed for 'proper' ones,
and the wings replaced with 'no light' ones. Also, I'll probably
lose the rock sliders, and of course the Disco seats :agh
       Oh, and two PTO holes?
  HTML http://www.rmsconsult.co.uk/landy/dey/rear1.jpg
This is going to be the base vehicle for another Carawagon, an
S2 one! I have a 'spare' Carawagon roof & sides, with all the
associated bits (bunks, curtain rails etc.), and so the rest
       should be easy!!!
       Cheers,
       Robin.
PS. This little gem was hidden away behind the winch

       I don't think so Alex.
My first thoughts, when I saw pictures of it, was some sort of
u/g work, and the rear winch could have been for lifting
manholes or lowering equipment down manholes!
Turns out the PO used to salvage steelwork from buildings, and
used it to lift his plasma cutter out of the back. He'd then
wrap a strop around the salvage and drag it out with the front
winch, up on to a trailer which he'd hitch to the front (hence
the very heavy duty winch bumper).
By the way, both winches work as well, which is a bonus 8)

Nice buy mate ......Is the rig on the back for "pie fishing"
...a favoured sport in Osset whereby folks try to tempt wild
Caramalised onion and pork products from their lairs ....before
being dragged up into the processing areas aboard LWB factory
       Landrovers .
Redwinch is the chap to speak regarding extra braking as ISTR he
had linked brakes on his Landy for towing the "small" trailer
       mounted winch he has/had

Hi Adam, between Cheadle & Blyth Bridge.
Though until Christmas it was parked on the road outside a house
in Werrington for 8 months, deliberately to pi55 off his
neighbours after they complained about all the cars he brings
home (euroboxes, not Land Rovers!) ::)

Hi, nice looking vehicle. I have seen another Series with both
sets of headlamps - do you have a photo of both sets of lights
on? Im vaguely toying with the idea of putting a Series 2 front
panel onto my Series 3, with high power spots / driving lights
instead of the Series 2 headlamps

Sorry, Steptoe has gone to a new home.
I originally bought him to convert into a camper as I'd just
bought a Carawagon roof on ebay; then a complete Carawagon
project came up a week later so I bought that :haha:
I did keep Steptoe until just a few weeks ago when someone was
wanting to do the same as I had intended doing, so I sold it on
as he'd just been languishing on my front lawn for 6 months.
It's now at Jake Wrights  being stripped and rebuilt on
a galv chassis, then the new owner will fit out the interior
       like a Carawagon.
The new owner is one of our Land Rover Classic Camper forum
members so we'll still see Steptoe around
