tray backing....

Im tempted to tray back my 86" with a metal frame and nice wood
and have a big metal storage box behind the cab for my saws and
fuel leaving much room behind for other stuff if i need to as
the back can be longer than original. Am i going to be strung up
for cutting my rear tub to keep the bulkhead ??? it would also
help keep the mud and crap from sticking in awkward places
underneath and be easier to clean/repair.
Thoughts........ :gay:

We have got an old S1 88 tub you could chop up. But to have a
decent load bed plus a box you'll have quite an overhang I
think?

Hmmm the overhang can be any sensible size cant it as off road
its never going to be low enough to hit anything so in theory i
could increase the space i have a fair bit! i think about it,
its only as i need a project to think about at the moment and i
ve seen the jackuals one in new zealand and daves old tacr as
well.....love the simple basic useable look of it!! to be honest
my rear tub is ex trialer and not in the best nick anyway, the
base is very dented and bent wheres its carried many logs!

you'll have to keep your overhang to a sensible length, two
reasons
first is your rear axle will become a leverage point so too much
weight behind it will make the steering exceptionally light
second is the added weight behind the axle will compress the
rear springs really easily (assisters may help)
i do like the look of traybacks though as they usually look
purposeful

Local Series 1 was converted to a tray back from a nice straight
hardtop (can't remember if it was a station wagon or not). Found
the hardtop sawn in half in my local scrappies :( :(

mines a truckcab so no killing of hardtops! i ve found mine
drives and rides better with weight in it. maybe due to the
heavy pto winch and tdi. anyway i will not be carrying weight
that often, just a few of a couple of times a month. I want the
timber back to be slightly heavy to make it smoother and have an
overhang of maybe a foot over original so not huge. starting to
like this idea! :giddy:

I think years ago there was a gay one built on a range rover
chassis in one of the mags.
My Dad got a 107" pickup rear bulkhead to do something similar
but he thinks the pikeys had it and a truckcab away at some
point. :banghead
