Robbing Fuckers...

The brass heater control valve on my Lightweight is pretty
fucked and has been for awhile but it's now got to the point
where it needs sorted so I stripped down a spare I had (it's not
an original Land Rover one but it would of done) and I noticed
the 'O' ring/seal thingy in that has probably seen better days
so, just for a laugh, I thought I'd see what a new one cost...
It seems the original older style you can strip are NLA, no
surprise really, and they are all now 'replacement' parts. I
priced a few Land Rover parts suppliers up and the prices varied
between about £30 and £50...bit fucking expensive for my
liking...
So, I thought I'd have a gander at the classic car places as
they were fitted onto older Moggies, MG's and Austin Healy etc.
Apart from the odd exception nearly all the classic car places
sold them for under £20, in fact I think most were under £15.
I ended up buying one from Moss Europe for £12.50, this is
exactly the same part no 88G588 as used on the Land Rover's and
I presume it's probably made by the same manufacturer (don't
imagine there's many factories churning these out). My
conclusion is that, judging by the price differences, Land Rover
parts suppliers are even bigger robbing bastards than I thought!
Just out of interest, has anyone rebuilt one of these valves?
What did you use to seal the shaft, looking at the thing it's
not an 'O'ring as such, more like a rubber sleeve or something,
but I'm guessing that an 'O' ring could be used if I can get the
right size? Always handy to keep it as a spare I figured if I
can fix it...
Just in case anyone is wondering which valve I mean...it's this
one

at the
back of the cylinder head next to the bulkhead, it screws into
an adaptor that is screwed into the head.

Yeah, gonna keep hold of both of the knacked strip-able ones I
have and see if I can get something like an 'O' to seal the
shaft sometime.

Not sure about Land Rovers other than the Lightweight had the
brass set up right to the end. Moggie Minors started out with
the brass valve and then went onto the other type (think it was
maybe aluminium - the one on me Mini was I'm pretty sure, dunno
about t'others?), the Midgets etc might of kept the brass type
but I couldn't swear on it, it's not summat I've really took
much notice of until now when I needed one.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've been running mine without a tap
for a couple of years now and it would be good to be able to
turn the heater off when the sun comes out!
