What have I done?

Finished the engine refresh yesterday.
Work done is valve regrind, new valve springs and stem oil
seals.
New big ends.
A bore hone and new piston rings.
New headgasket, rocker gasket etc
Valve clearances set.
Started up fine but there is now an almighty induction thump
when it's running. Currently got a boy racer stylee air filter
fitted (as ICBA to sort out a proper one) There always used to
be a bit of a thump but now it's LOUD.
Any thoughts as to what I've fucked up to increase the volume so
much?

is it a diesel or petrol, if its a diesel check the injector as
if its not working that would cause a thump, check the tappits,
could be a valve not seated, do a compression test to make sure
thats fine, could be the pre-combustion chamber not working
right.

They do sound bloody awful without a proper air filter, maybe
the increased compression and set valves are making the
difference?!

^^^WHS. We used to have one that sounded like a Chinook when it
had a chavtastic air filter and the idle set really low, you'd
hear the "wopwopwopwopwop" from a couple of streets away. ;D

Thanks for the replies chaps.
Been out and sort of sorted the original air filter (from a
boingy to match the boingy engine) There is still quite a lot of
noise (wopwopwopwop) enough to be heard over half a mile away
over open ground :confused:
Might be a duff injector - could it be an injector not seated
right? 99% certain that all the valves are seated correctly. As
this was my 1st time taking a head apart I must have checked
that everything was 'just so' about a million times before I
stuck the head back on.

It's worth a go but in my experience a ill-seating injector
tends to chuff out of it's housing and makes a terminal-sounding
noise. You will think it's dropped a valve or something!
Have you changed the timing/belt?

Nope - coffers ran dry when ordering parts. Rubber band due to
be changed after next pay day.

The last time I had an inlet valve not seating properly on the
2.5 there was a hell of a noise, but there was also an obvious
misfire and grey smoke out the back. Have you taken it for a
drive yet?

Only been for the briefest of runs - no more than about 1/4
mile. Didn't notice loads of smoke of any colour. It's
definitely pulling better than it used to tho' which is puzzling
me even more as I would have thought that if there was a problem
with a valve not seating right it'd be down on power.
And just to prove I am a bit of an idiot, to check if it's a
duff injector, I slacken off an injector in turn which should
make the engine run rough until I get to the injector that is
duff then there would be no change? That is right isn't it?
