Warwick, you need to join the S1 forum, there are loads of
members in Oz and there appear to be tons of 80s out there!

Right, a quick update, not done this for a while as the Bus has
been hard at work firstly moving house then tip runs etc sorting
the new place out a bit.
We moved house on the Friday it snowed the worst snow for 30
years, we had hired a big van and loaded up a lot of stuff the
day before, but come moving day we could not get it back to the
house to load the rest so the 80 was pressed in to service to
make many runs. If it wasn't for the Landy we would not have
moved that day!
Moving the fridge freezer-

While packing up I found more 35mm pics of the Bus taken in
around 1996, nice patina although it was just called tatty back
then-

Now for a bit of Britsh vintage bling.
For a couple of years I have been collecting bits and bats for a
slight dash rebuild, now I have hit 40 I seem to getting a bit
anal about the small stuff so bare with me.
I have replaced all the switches with ones bought on ebay and
autojumbles, I never liked the Lucas pull switch so replaced it
with a much better looking Trico one. I got some vintage British
toggle switches to replace the far easten ones on the steering
column and changed the cheap red plastic guard over the heater
plug switch with a switch cover from a English Electric
Canbarra.
Finally I have always wanted a decent clock, not wanting to ruin
the lovely simplicity of the 80 dash, it had to be something a
bit special, so after quite a few years of searching including
looking at old RAF clocks (every 40s Air Ministry clock on ebay
claims to be from a Spitfire :-?). I finally found the perfect
one (for me), a Britsh Jaeger timepiece from the Rover P2/3. It
is the same style as the early 80 dials same colour and font on
the face, just a bit bigger (which I wanted as a centrepiece).
I wanted the clock panel to look like it was a opitional extra
back in 1950 so after making a template out of a cornflake
packet I gave it to the metal wizard that is Luke telling him to
make it strong. He made a great job of it out of a thick gauge
of alumimium >rock<.
When I got it home all I had to do was file out the middle so
the clock was a snug fit. I then sanded the face with ever finer
grades of wet and dry to shallow out the small dents and
scratches in the metal leaving some imperfections to age it,
finally compounding it with the buffer and a buff or 20 with
t-cut. I have also angled the panel to match the slight slope of
the 80s dash and make it easier to see from the front seats.
Also in this position it is lit at night by a small red LED
hidden under the dash. The result is that it is a good match
with dash panel and looks like it has been on for the last 63
years :rolleye0012:.

Quick update, after "El Faff" and the best part of 3000 miles a
few things needed sorting out. First (as seen in another thread)
I bought some Fedima Maxima 7.50s to replace my tired old SATs
that I bought new about 5 or 6 years ago. Taller and skinnier
than the Firestones, radial instead of cross ply, they have
given the Bus a bit of a lift and should be better in most
departments over the old tyres, time will tell.

Next up, on the way down though France we had a slight
electrical issue with the power sockets. We had power but the
feed was very weak and would not charge anything or power the
navs. With the help of Drew we hardwired a 4 way adapter to the
feed i have for the CB from under the steering column. As the
position of the sockets leave them a bit vulnerable (on the
front of the seat box) to water, dust, mud etc, I decided to
replace the standard fag lighters with something a bit more
substantial. I found some waterproof power sockets for boats
sealed at the back where the wires exit and have proper bungs at
the front just incase wading gets a bit more intense than
normal, although its only been this deep maybe 3 or 4 times in
the last 18 years :rolleye0012:.

The last thing (apart from having three holes patched up on the
hood where the mountain bike had been jiggling around for a few
miles) was to replace the knackerd front prop. I bought a
Bearmach rear 88" that is the same as on the front series one, a
perfect fit.

Hi Vidal
Love your motor, seems you got your 80 round the same time as
me, mine came from a fellow yroc member over in Scisset. I'd
love to see some more piccies of the TDi install. While my 2l is
still sweet it stays in the beastie, but I do have a very nice
200 TDi sitting in the corner of the garage (that I have to
squeeze the 80 around) that I ripped from an old Disco we
scrapped earlier this year.
What exhaust manifold did you use? engine mounts etc, what kind
of adaption did you need to fit to the series gearbox? I just
want to store the knowledge awa incase I ever tr to install it.
KJ
