;)Always admired The Bus from afar. Probably the best looking
in the forum.
I'm in the process of converting my 86" from a 2.25petrol to a
200 tdi and i'm clueless with the wiring any tips? Is it
straight forward?
[/quote]
Cheers pal, sorry I have not replied sooner but been away for a
week, I don't have much of a clue about the wiring as I am a
muppet when it comes to anything under the bonnet ??? although
with a 200Tdi I don't think it is too much of a nightmare.

After years of rebuilding the front wings (more often when the
Tdi was put in) I finally got a great early set off Luke. You
can buy new ones from a place on the hills above Halifax, as far
as I know the only place in the world that remakes the early
stuff, but they are a fortune and have a long waiting list as
they are all hand built (bloody great though). Anyway the set I
got are in great condition although had be drilled for side
lights and indicators but someone had tried to fibreglass over
them and the wings had been refurbed in Bronze green. They just
needed a bit of work to make the holes invisible and a rub down
for some (almost) matching paint. Because of its history the
rest of the Bodywork on the Bus has been repaired more than a
few times and as its getting on a bit I thought the rear tub
needed some attention (as the front wings will be looking a tad
better) so I have tried to get rid if as much of the old filler
as possible and replace only if really needed with stronger
fibeglass.
The old wings might be a salvageable to an ok condition but
would take a bit of work (ICBA and the Tdi would undo most of
the work in a few months) but might be worth sticking on a
trialler or something, free to anyone and I can take t'pit in a
few weeks. I will post some more pics when the new ones are
stuck to the Bus. Here are a few phone pics so far-

Nice photos of a fantastic looking motor. What's the story with
the creature motif on the tail gate?

Well the wings have been on for a while and are doing a great
job i.e. not falling apart and/or off. I have managed to take
some of the play out of the steering with the help over the
phone from a certain Mr F Tiger, cheers pal.
So before we all set off on holiday this summer in it their were
a few things to sort out.
First I got it into work to use the ramps to give the
transmission an oil change, this may have been overdue as I have
seen sea birds flapping around in less black gloopy stuff on the
news than what came out off the front and rear diffs. The
gearbox was not too bad as it has a great rolling top up system
that means it never gets too black as it never stays on the box
long enough. Also managed to touch up any missing underseal.
Second, the little (cheap Chinese rubbish) amp that has been in
for a few years now has seen better days and was starting to
play up a bit. This may also have been due to the way it had
been installed, by myself. Bodged is not a strong enough word,
and I could not believe how much of a mess the wiring was in,
not even the right wire as I had used just the the same old
cheap speaker wire for everything even power supply. Most of it
was just hanging loose under the floor :haha:! So a new amp was
purchased for a massive £15 including postage. A stunning Lepai
unit (more cheap Chinese rubbish) that is actully way better
than the old one (so far). It is a bit bigger but better built,
more powerful and has better sound quality. The old unit had no
controls on it at all, not even an on switch as it switched on
when it music played, it just had a jackplug for any kind of MP3
which meant you had to control everything through the player,
once you had found it stuffed behind the seats or on the floor,
not ideal. The new one has on/off, bass, treble and a large
volume dial. I have had to reposition it, still behind the
drivers seat back but on the outer side so I can play with its
knobs, ahem. It is the best place for it, out of the way of any
water and crap. Everything has been rewired with the correct
stuff with a lot better connections.
A few phone pics-

Also to keep it protected from the elements a bit more, keep it
from the sight of the lighter fingered members of the public and
to keep the look of a classic motor and not to have a cheap
piece of tat on display, I have fixed a nice flap of canvas over
the top. I have kept the original marine speakers in the seat
box so they are not really visible.

HTML http://i342.photobucket.com/albums/o429/vidal130/15072012365.jpg
Next I have got rid of the small (gay) fogs under the bumper and
the spotlight on the bumper. The beam on the fogs was too wide
and the spot was too pencil-like, if it got knocked even a
little bit it was next to useless :haha:! Also I think seven
forward lights was a bit of overkill.
I have replaced all these with just one, BIG one. A more
inkeeping 7" Lucas drivng lamp with a much better spread of
light. I have set this back from the bumper on a big bracket out
of harms way and rock solid.
