Help My house has broken.

---------------------------------------------------------
So this week I have been using my 101 as a home from home. I'm
200 miles away from real home. The 101 got here fine and I
thought all was well untill I did a slightly longer little trip
and I noticed the temp gauge was on the red line which is
strange after a little trip. So checked fluid all good. Went
for another drive same thing happened so checked the hoses with
the rad cap off.
Water level good.
Pump working
thermostat opening.
No oil
There was some bigger bubbles at first but disappeared after the
engine was revved a bit.
Engine temp gets up to working temp fine, gets hotter and
kenlowe kicks in and cools the engine and switches off.
However on the road the engine is significantly hotter and I
risk it overheating and stalling.
So I assume it's head gasket.
Do you concur?
As I am living in the 101 till Thursday I don't have much
choice.
What are my options.
Limp to a garage and get some mug to do it (how much?)
change gaskets as I have 2 spare (but never done it before and I
am in a field + I have work to do.
Get recovered home on Thursday.
Help

Thanks for the replies. I am currently at Bisley, Surrey.
The rad is ouchy to touch after a few seconds. Top Hose also
quite hot. Bottom hose cooler.
Its the original v8 so its 2 heads.

Just checked. I don't have a torque wrench or my feeler
gauges. What would be the symptoms if the thermostat was
malfunctioning.

Getting very hot and reduced circulation may be noticeable in
the expansion tank. If the head gasket leak develops, it can
reach the point where it chucks the coolant out the header tank.

you could try and get a compression tester, and give each
cylinder a check, not sure what values you're looking for but
its more important that they're all about the same.
are there any cool spots on the rad?
is the rad blocked at all?
has the timing been knocked out somehow? is the dizzy tight.
are the brakes binding?
is the oil at the correct level?
To test if the stat is working, remove it and if the problem
goes away then it wasn't.

Apart from the heat, the engine is fine. It drove 200 miles
fine, but now it wont get very far. All fluids are where they
are supposed to be.

Unless it is past taht point, fire a double measure of K Seal in
it. (Like Radweld but better) I've driven thousand of miles
with in my wifes Eurobin.

Try taking the thermostat out?
No visible water leaks? Any steam from the exhaust or oil and
water mixing?
