i have a problem with my land rover 88 she has a 2.25 petrol
with a 1.75 S.U carb from ACR and a stage 2 head from ACR she
run's sweet as a nut but when i get to a hill the speed drops
from 30 mph in top gear to 15 mph in 3rd at 1/4 trottle now my
question is is the landy problem is it's driver EG me or is
there a problem with the land rovers engine ? i NEVER rev it
over 2500 rpm i passed my test 2 years ago in a a 07 plate ford
fiesta tdci am i asking too much of the landy ? please tell me
how to drive it

It's a petrol, and a not particularly powerful one. Rev it to at
least 3250 - they are designed for 4250ish max so it's perfectly
safe. Making it labour like you do will coke up the engine in no
time at all.
As a guide, I change up a gear in mine when the indicated speed
is 10x the current gear number. Ie
2nd to third at 20, 3rd to 4th at 30 - and even this is being
über-conservative on the revving front.
Being an old long stroke engine it will sound a lot more
thrashed than it actually is when revving.

You're just not giving it enough hoof, Landmark. That's not to
say you should Max Power it like a wanker, but if you want to go
up a hill in one of the two higher gears, at anything
approaching a reasonable speed, you'll need a bit more than 1/4
throttle. And you needn't worry that you'll be spunking fuel
away...you won't - it's what the engine needs to work. But what
you will be doing is putting pointless workload on the
drivetrain if you labour it so.
Also, unless either yourself or Mat have had rev-counters
retro-fitted to your motors, how both of you can measure revs to
such exact turns (3250...I ask you) with relatively little
experience of the vehicles is beyond me.

As Drew points out, you need the 'drive' an old land rover more
than the fiesta you learnt in. The fiesta probably has twice the
power to weight ratio of your land rover and is quite a lot more
aerodynamic. Dont be frightened to work the engine.

My mistake Drew, thanks for pointing out something I should have
included in my original reply:
Good use can be made of a gearing chart- familiarize yourself
with it so ou have a rough idea what revs the engine is doing at
a given speed in a given gear - I stuck data from here:
HTML http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/gear_ratio.htm
into a spreadsheet and soon had an idea of what speed in each
gear equalled my self imposed 3250 rev limit. I was surprised
initially at some of the values and you might be too

The values have...err...value. But experience of both
professional LGV driving and personal use of a multitude of
vehicles has told me to drive with my ears when no rev-counter
is present. And still, even when 'keeping it in the green' with
a counter, your ears still ought to tell you it's time to go up,
down, or give it some gas.
Tech values tend to be very theoretical based on bench-testing,
track endurance and controlled road circumstances, with new
units. They do, however, go out of the window when it comes to
engines which are more than bedded-in by a multitude of previous
owners with different sympathies.
Your 'x10' mode of gear-change may work for your ride, but it
can't be a universal rule-of-thumb, as can't build/test data.
The ear, however, is a pretty sound yardstick...unless you're
deaf ;D

If you have your foot near to the floor and the revs are
dropping, you need to change down. Till you get to know it, I'm
usually cruising at 30 at about an eighth throttle to no
throttle where it coasts. Hills in Stockport/ Manchester/ Wales,
can vary between half, and full throttle to get up without
labouring. I can get up all but 1 in 4th with an engine that was
blowing past the rings, Put a new engine in, bog standard
petrol, and I don't think ill have to resort to 3rd.
You will find the series will do most stuff in 4th gear, I can
drive to Wales without coming out of 4th except for the
occasional junction being against me.
The engine is designed to rev to 4250, but if you stick at 3750
tops that gives you some margin while your learning. (its
revving to about that with a guestimate on the motorway at
65ish)
Take it on a 60 MPH road, drive 60mph, and listen to the car,
Drews advice is sound, drive with your ears. I rev in 3rd to
about 3000, bit more than most, but it makes the step between
gears less into 4th.
Dont let the transmission 'graunche' that horrid scrapy sound at
low engine revs in a high gear, easy way to say bye bye to bits
off gearbox. Change down.
Drive it at 60, see what its like, that note is what id do
comfortably with it.
Be gentle but don't be afraid to put your foot down, if it wont
go up keep up with most other cars on a small hill, you have a
problem, long drags may slow you, and require a down-change.
Drew may know this one. Old a road from Chester back to Mancs
Via knutsford way is how I get home from Wales, there is quite a
hill on that, I went up that in a laden 88" SW overtaking(dual
lane) against things like berlingo and small vans. it wasn't
labouring, but was accelerating.
Dont be afraid to boot it, but don't redline it by revving it
with the pedal at the stop forever.

With those goodies on the engine it should pull like a train.
Being over-cautious is better than thrashing it everywhere, so
as said don't be afraid to give it some beans, your ears will
tell you to back off a long time before you really need to.

Just wait till you try an old Land Rover diesel Mr. LandMark.
You will learn a whole new meaning to listening to the engine.
:)
