Fine example, Neil. Damned fine!
We've had a go at rearing two of these.
The first was from egg and which we plonked beneath a broody
hen. Good for her, she sat on it until it hatched, but
peacock/hen chicks being pretty fragile, she needed to be in the
nursery for quite a bit until she'd developed. Sadly, the
surrogate mother got bored to the extreme and we found her doing
the old infanticide thing by trampling on the chick at about one
month old.
Second we were given at about 18-months old and it was a damned
fine bird which had a fine disposition and had developed a
glorious plumage. Pretty hardy too, staying out in all weathers,
despite the house we'd built for it. And it was this Ray Mears
outdoors approach to being a peacock which saw Mr Fox make a
right old meal of it, last October.
I'd keep another, but I really did feel for this one as it was
(as is their wont) pretty vocal for a hen to shag, one which
wasn't there. Indeed, I was tempted to present my arse on more
than one occasion, just to keep it happy.
But if anybody believes these are a flightless bird, I'm here to
tell you that Darwin was correct in his observation that such a
glorious tail-fan not actually being a detriment to flight was
baffling...they really can soar if they're of a mind to. I had
to power-hose ours of the roof of the neighbour's house once.
It's just a pity he didn't stretch his wings in the name of
self-preservation when the sly one got in the pen. But being
pretty mal-sighted in the dark, I suppose all it did was run
around until it was snapped.
Our boring history aside, great to see one in a wild and free
setting. So many thanks, Neil.

My neighbour used to keep them and as Drew says there is not a a
bird I can think of that is so awkward in the air but still gets
up there making the sort of aerodynamic noise that would an owl
wince.

they are indeed impressive. we have been clearing a bit of
surplus woods from the grounds of a country house, and these
peafowl are roaming freely about the grounds.
yesterday we had to use the Logrover to skid some trunks out as
it was a bit tight and soft to get the tractor and trailer in
(any excuse). so good old logrover did the job fine.

thanks again guys - glad its still appreciated. havn't built
anything significant after the log-rover project - mainly as it
was kinda the ultimate project for me and my mate - and because
its still doing its job just fine...
used it for winching last weekend as well, pulling out a hung up
wind sheared limb:
