Head Gasket Failure

is this a common failure on the 5mb 2.25 petrol engines ?
checked my levels this morning and its the dreaded mayonaisse
residue on the dipstick and water level is low ???

Not really that common, but can happen.
Are you sure it's actually failed? It's quite normal to get a
bit of mayonnaise if you only do short trips as the engine isn't
warm long enough to purge all the moisture and condensation that
naturally forms.
Unless the amounts of mayonnaise are horrific, or the engine is
running like a bag of spanners I'd be tempted to leave it alone,
or at least try taking it on a blast down a motorway or
something and see if it clears up! :thumbs:

Have a little mayo in mine due to little use, head gasket is
fine though(probably only thing that is)

On the plus side the headgasket is a fairly easy job.

took her for a decent run as i dont recall her mis-firing at all
recently, got home and undid the rocker cover ad everything
seemed normal n there, no sign of mayo in there at all apart
from a small amount of residue on the undersideof it and the
filter is clogged up with a bright yellow scum, the hose that
goes from the rocker cover to the air intake hose was a bit
watery when i took it off, checked the water level and it was
back to normal, drained the oil and there was a tiny bit of
water in it but nothing drastic so im guessing its ok
any ideas on what best to clean the filter on top of the rocker
cover out with ?

The filter on top of the rocker cover is a breather and I
normally clean it in petrol. I find that one of the bigger dog
food tins suits the width perfectly, chuck in the breather fill
over the top with petrol (other cleaning products are available)
and leave for half hour or so. Flush through if needs be with a
bit more petrol, leave to dry then soak in oil, but not too
much that it's dripping everywhere.
