Tubs - diseasel 88

Sort of copied over from the old forum.
Tubs isn't mine. This is the most important thing to say. Tubs
belongs to Wendy.
Bought off Ebay about 4 years ago from a guy down in Wakefield.
Wen went down on the train and drove back up to Cumbria after
never driving a Land Rover of any sort let alone a leafer :o
Tubs is a 1981 Series III which left the factory with a 2.25
diseasel. From what we know it was a farm hack which at some
point had after market station wagon windows fitted.
As is the wont of Land Rovers, Tubs tested Wen over the first
few weekends of ownership with a small wiring fire behind the
dash and a broken injector pipe. Other than that, the first
couple of years were uneventful, with nothing more than the MOT
and the odd oil change.
That changed when Tubs was sabotaged (I kid you not) by some
evil girls at the youth centre. A sugary drink was sneakily
administered to an unlocked diseasel filler and this, coupled
with a clutch failure which mothballed Tubs for a couple of
months had a catastrophic effect on the engine - total, nasty
failure.
A new engine was sourced from a trusted mate, who both serviced
and guaranteed it. This engine was a 2.5 nat ass from a deceased
boingy.
Wendy fitted the engine herself. She did everything bar welding
in the new engine mount and that was simply because she didn't
have a welder of her own.....
Since then there have been a few trials and tribulations but
nothing we haven't been able to sort between the two of us.
The gear box let go.....

Fixed up with a £5 OLLR replacement ;D
The brakes got overhauled....

New (old stock) springs were sourced, refurbed and fitted.

A new drivers door was fitted, a rear work light, new dipstick
tube and a few other bits and pieces.

So this was Tubs, up to date - May 2010

The MoT expired in October 2010 saw Tubs sidelined for a while -
a lack of money and huge dose of CBA'ness meant she sat that all
forlorn waiting for something to happen.
I had a little episode in March of last year which saw me off
work for about 3 months. Part of my therapy was to find
something I enjoyed that I could concentrate on - Landy rebuild
on doctors orders! Never did manage to get a prescription for
EP90 though.

Quite an embarrassing mess considering I would have always
described Tubs as pretty sound
Stuff did start to go back together - my welding hasn't got any
prettier.

Other work done at this point (but no pics to go along with it)
included...
Swivel rebuild was done and was a lot less daunting than I first
thought it might be. Using the workshop manual and Cakey Daves
very useful guide in the tech section it went off with out a
hitch.
The rear crossmember was complete toast so I bit the bullet and
ordered a replacement. Dug out the stick welder and had the new
cross in place and welded up in double time. Slathered a load of
anti rust paint about. Brakes were fettled and new flexi's
fitted. Bled up using the 176" method and the pedal was the best
I've ever known.
Tub supports replaced with some 25x50 box section.
A liberal application of Waxoyl inside the chassis should
hopefully keep the tin worm at bay for a while.
Front end has been rewired with very gay halogen headlamps.
Relays wired in to lessen the strain on the switches.
Chassis was painted over again (3 coats now) Middle exhaust
hanger had to be welded up as it has started to let go. Seatbox
was repaired and under seat toolbox was fabricated and fitted.
So, after all that, presented to the MoT man and given a ticket
:giddy:
So in the following year Tubs has been out and about, my
transport to and from work, out on the odd lane

That's not to say there haven't been a few trials. Most recently
the exploding transfer box saga when the front prop escaped
while on a trip to the beach

MoT is coming round in the next couple of months so there's a
few little jobs to tackle - mainly neatening up my awful wiring
and making sure it's all secure in line with the new MoT rules.
Going to be doing a bit of a freshen up of the engine to as it's
getting a bit tired and it breathing quite badly. Pictures when
it all starts again ::)

Well done Brewer, I'm really impressed with tubs. After first
seeing her in a right state, she really has come along.

You know the answer to that already, I've never welded before.
Suppose I should learn how to.....

Started out on the engine refresher today.
1st off was whacking a 2 pack rad cleaner through as, even
though there was loads of good quality antifreeze dropped in
when the cooling system was last flushed through things looked
to be quite rusty in there. Loads of faffing, running up to
temp, dropping the water, back flushing, filling up etc. End
result is there is a lot less rusty looking shite loitering in
the rad.
Next, just to annoy Dave, I whipped the head off ;-) Had a quick
look at things and other than there being a load of oil things
didn't initially look too bad. Then I had a closer look at
things. Looks like the head gasket had been letting by a bit
between 2 and 3. Next was dropping the valves  Very black,
very pitted, very nasty - hardly surprising that the power
seemed to be down. Out with the grinding paste and lapped them
all in.
Ran out of time at this point as the missus was calling.
Back to it tomorrow - hoping that I'll get my delivery so I can
get on fitting the new big ends and piston rings.
Thanks to Redgy for popping over and lending a hand/talking
bollocks/drinking coffee etc.

As appearing in the Tech Section the engine refresher didn't go
100% smoothly.
After tracing the eejits mistake to an incorrectly seated valve,
engine was put back together and has run really smoothly since.
Tubs has been earning her keep over the last couple of days. 1st
off was a run up the coast to borrow a very nice transporter
trailer from a friend of a friend. It's a twin axle Ifor with a
tilting bed and a winch and is a joy to tow. Once home there was
a short run to pick up the 109 (Fred) and run it back so it's
now on the drive and ready to be worked on. Loaded up the
trailer with the dead Focus before running it off to the scrap
man. Didn't use my usual guy as the 2nd purpose of this run out
was to pick up Redgy's new 88. So out to Edenhall, picked up the
88 and came home again.
So now at Chez Brewer we've got Tubs, Fred and Redgy's nameless
88.
This morning trailer was employed to collect the 109's chassis
and get that home too. Ran back up with the trailer to drop it
off before having a nosey round this chaps yard.
75 Land-Rovers in various states of repair, including an early
diesel Series I and a mint 80. Also a fire engine, a couple of
buses and a traction engine.
A couple of tribulations though. The starter button died a
death, then the starter, then the alternator ::) All sorted bar
the starter button - got a couple of bare wires that just need
to be touched together to get things started now :haha:
