An Aveling &amp; Porter's a workman's machine..

...often a roller and usually green.
Except for this one, which isn't green (yet) and is also on the
diddy side as steam rollers go.
It's a steam project, which I've been after for a while, and
co-owned by Mr Drew5292 who caught the steam bug after coming to
see the bigguns a few times and having a run out with the
full-size at Christmas. The plan is to finish it off, have a bit
of fun and then sell on to maybe, eventually, climb the ladder
to a full size project.
It's a 2-inches-to-the-foot model of an Aveling & Porter AD type
8/10 ton compound steam roller, designed by a chap called John
Haining and serialised in Model Engineer during 1974. It was
started around that time by an engineer in Cornwall who pretty
much did all the major work; machining the majority of the
castings and making/fitting the gears, crank, tender, wheels,
valve gear and cylinder. He also made the copper boiler but
didn't get as far as brazing it up. It changed hands a couple of
times and had been standing awaiting attention for a while when
it came up for grabs.

It's a fair representation of the original, maybe not exacting
in detail but all the bits are there including the gearing
layout, the balanced crank and the cast brackets that hold the
crank and second shaft.

It came with the firebox made (but not brazed), the front
tubeplate ready to fit and a set of tubes.

After making a list of what is missing (mostly boiler fittings,
valves, pipework, gauges and a few levers) the stripdown began.
The back wheels are held onto the axle with a collar and a pin,
with those removed the wheel slides off. The Mamod-sized roller
on the right gives you an idea of the size.

This reveals the final drive gear. The hole to the right of the
axle takes the driving pin which passes through the wheel hub to
transmit drive - a bit like the halfshaft bolts on a Land Rover.
Most rollers didn't have a differential though some did,
generally incorporated in this final drive.

Above this is the third shaft, with the gear keyed to the shaft
- loosely in this case as the roller appears to have been hung
together to get it in one piece.

I've ordered a set of drawings and once they arrive the plan is
to finish off and braze up the boiler which will be done at the
shed where the bigguns are. The firebox goes in here...

Plus various bosses for boiler fittings and gauges, firebox
stays etc...
Will post progress if anyone is interested, lots of cleaning and
painting to do and a few small castings to machine.

definitely interested in watching this progress :thumbs:
i have no knowledge of steam except i like the looks and sound
of them so this may become a little educational for me, lots of
pictures of making stuff please :thumbs:

It's a full-sized roller we'd like to work up to over the years,
Edd. They get a bit neglected, overlooked and scrapped, due to
the general lumpiness of them. But Kev and I are all for them as
uber-utility motors of yesterday, but today, here now, tomorrow.
Take your tandem jobbie...one of only two left in the world.
That tells you something about them.
As for this A&P...well, I'm obviously damned enthusiastic and
chuffed to bits about having the honour to co-own such a tool
with Scruff. He's the real knowledge on the subject and, save
for as many shedding trips over to the UK as I can sensibly
afford, it'll be he who does the majority of the graft, which
will still leave me with quite a few practical holes in my
knowledge of the workings, etc. Yeah!...I can read-up and
wise-up, and this will keep the fire stoked when it comes to the
admiration and the finally achieving our ultimate goal. But
there's nothing like getting oily fingernails.
Be that as it may, a full 50/50 co-own it indeed is and I'll be
viewing progress from afar with just as much enthusiasm as
Scruffoid is spannering and generally living his life dream,
allbeit starting the match in small boots.

I'm not usually into model steam (although I appreciate and
admire the engineering and workmanship that goes into them),
however this model roller is a stunner. I'll watch this thread
with interest.
