The internals of the steering relay

Ever wanted to know what's inside a series steering relay BUT
       were frightened to look ???
Ok then here you go ...........
  HTML http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l72/spellcaster69/Picture008.jpg
You can see the one half of the "split bush" at the end of the
       devils spring.
there are two split bushes top and bottom of the relay ,forced
apart by the devils spring in the middle (as the bushes wear
(similar material to railko bush material) they are pushed
       further apart to compensate )

If you look closely at this pic,you should be able to make out
,that the bottom split bush of the relay is in good clean order
,as is the relay shaft .
Whereas the top one has obviously suffered from lack of
lubricant ,and possibly water ingress ,and the bush has a dark
almost overheated look and the corresponding section of the
idler shaft is rusty and pitted and thus fooked ...............
I presume that the bottom bush has preserved a amount of
lubricant around it ,where the upper one has run dry .
Remove one of the retaining bolts and fit with a grease nipple
       ??? ? might be a better option .
       WORD OF WARNING
The devils spring is under some pressure when in situ in the
idler ,and if you are not careful when removing either end of
       the idler ...
IS likely to fly off and out and "Have some fookers eye out
       !!!!and that "
       be warned
Vinny had to duck like a ninja when i stripped this one
       .......my how he giggled

I did wonder as to what was inside and more so, why not to just
undo everything and try and have your eye out.... ;)

I too wondered about the relays contents, it is easy to see how
it is all tensioned up to take out backlash with the taper
       bearings.
       Thanks!

Do you have an approved method of putting it all back together
       safely?
Might help those like me who are accident prone.
       Cheers
       Simon.

4 of long bolts + 4 nuts all matching to the thread of the
retaining bolt holes of the body of the relay .
Run nuts up the full length of the bolts
place 2 bolts opposing each other in each end of the relay and
       seat them home
Start to tighten up each of the nuts a few turns at a time
       keeping everything nice and even
Once the end caps are seated place the original bolts into the
remaining holes and tighten before removing long bolts and
       fitting the final bolts
Long winded BUT greatly reduces the likelyhood of flying springs
       etc
And dont forget to re-fill with oil
