Original and tidy

I like things to be neat and tidy, and original. When I remove a
part, it is usually treated to a good clean and painted.
So now I’m doing a service on my 1971 6-cylinder 2A, and the
fact that my oil bath air cleaner is silver bothers me.
Shouldn’t it be black? Same applies to my oil filter canister.
What colour should that be?

I've seen some that look original that have flecks of silver
paint on, and some that look original with flecks of black
paint on as long as it's neat and tidy who paint it whatever
colour you like!

Some air cleaners were silver from new. I don't know if there's
any particular rivet-counting reason for it, such as model years
or if the factory got a better deal on one colour or the other
from time to time. I wouldn't worry about it so long as it does
its job.

Mine is unpainted silver. Vehicle is '68 but fuck knows if the
filter is. Still got the 'Fill Level' sticker on, which
according to Bashall is hot shit 8) 8)

Mine was silver when I first got it, but I sprayed it gold ...
... for the shear hell of it ... and that's all I had in the
garage at the time... :-\

Air filter on an early 6-cylinder 109" here is black if that
helps (D suffix, probably June 1967 build date). Looks better in
black anyway, IMO. As said it seems a bit of a lottery - I would
paint it whichever colour looks best!

I have a feeling it may have changed around 1967 when the
negative earth black dash became standard. Certainly my '66
motors have a factory hammerite-type silver finish and the later
ones are plain back. The rocker cover breather and oil filler
caps were also hammered silver and changed to black along the
way.

Those were all black on mine, as was the steering box (so many
seem to be plain alloy, especially on rebuilds) I think the
paint didn't like sticking to the alloy casting that much, so
flakes off pretty quickly.
I have lots of black paint, so most things get painted black.
Looks smart as well.

Thank you for all the replies. Mine is a late 2A, so from what
you guys say it appears my engine bay is pretty much original.
So I will keep it that way. I also think black looks better, but
original it will stay.
NoelC, thanks for the info on the negative earth black dash. I
did not know that. Mine is black.
