Good this! took my spare box apart and its in tip top condition!
no chipped teeth or worn teeth, bearings look good, just need to
replace the bellhousing with my original. no reason why it fell
out of 3rd, a recon it was the ball retention springs being
rubbish. Really good post this especially the 3rd/4th
gear right way round bit as o would nt have noticed! ::)

[quote author=Lucy link=topic=120.msg7791#msg7791
date=1327611269]... It's mostly applicable to series 2 boxes as
well. I think the main differences (and please someone who
knows, correct me if I'm wrong) are that the series 2 box has
square cut gears on 1st and 2nd and no syncros on those gears
...
[/quote]
The only other main difference that might be worth pointing out
is the layshafts - all one piece on the SIII boxes, but IIa
boxes have a splined shaft and gears fitted onto it. Lots of
other differences of course, but most are fairly minor in
comparison.

Got to take my S3 box out this w/e....making a horrible noise
that can be felt and heard coming up the gear-stick...its been
jumping out of 3rd for a while now...only when cold.
I re-built it around 100.000mls ago and I remember then the
major prob I had was how to id what was worn and what was ok.
I will prob have the same trouble this time...and also where to
buy my parts..dont want duff new parts.
So any tips on how to id worn parts that are not obvious to the
eye.
Nick.

i'd first like to thank thread starter as the pictures in here
have been invaluable over the last couple of weeks.
there are some pictures in my diary thread of knackered 3rd/4th
syncro nickj, in my very limited experience i would say warn
stuff will be very obvious...

Wow, thanks for this.
Not been on here for a while but when I was returning from this
years ALRC Nats I started to get a terrible howling from the
gearbox akin to that of an angle grinder with a failing gearbox.
This only happens in 4th gear whilst cruising around.
I have go so far as getting the box out of my 80" and cleaning
it off. I have ordered a full set of gaskets and seals from
Dingocroft and hopefully tonight I may get it into the shed to
start stripping it down.
I shall be replacing the clutch plate whilst its out too.
Another thing I found was the refurbed starter started to spin
and have problems engaging after a full day trielling, I noticed
when I remover the gearbox a bit of wire sticking out of the
starter nose, the pinion return spring was all chewed up !

It's what you would assume isn't it but not so, early boxes with
non synchro 1st & 2nd actually have a straight cut 1st gear set
but a helical cut 2nd gear set which is brought into play using
dogs on the side of the gear when the 1st gear on the mainshaft
is moved into place, that locks the helical cut 2nd gear to the
mainshaft.
