8-4-6...The beauty of petrol engine cylinder configuration.

I don't know about everybody else, but Resurrection and myself
are getting a little wanked-off at the gayality and 'so 2011'
that the Tdi conversion has become. And, importantly, the fact
that it gives you not a lot more.
Anybody with even the slightest nugget of technowledge would
know that the Rover 3.5 V8 Carb engine is the finest invention
ever in engineeringland...better even than the Land-Rover
itself. Second is the 2.25 or 2.0l petrol, closely followed by
the 6-pot.
All petrol engines, with 8,4 and 6 cylinders, in the order of
superiority.
So why do people still believe they are improving their rides by
queering it up with a Tdi?
Petrol is pure, and to hell with consumption and the cost.

And a decent exhaust pipe 8) 2.25 at 5000 rpm is where it's at
- try doing that with the hairdryer equipped motors ;D

Quite! there does seem to be a general lazy man answer to even
the simplest engine problems - fit a Tdi. Don't get me wrong
they are good and I've done a few. But I've come to realise
after 4 engines that the best engine for any motor is the
original one. Let's face it, endless hours monging up boingy rad
frames to fit behind front panels, bodged on upside down engine
mounts, removing intercoolers, oil coolers and the most monged
up exhaust routing ever, give nothing but a sense of shame when
you open the bonnet and all these "mods" will never be undone -
I've had trouble undoing what I changed. I've not seen a good
one for years, all done in a weekend using whatever is lying
around, it's actually embarassing.
Second to all that OLLR is about leafers and not boingies, I've
got a tdi Defender, I know it inside out and don't want to read
about it when I'm on the forum I use for catching up on leaf
sprung goodness. Bring back the days of a bloke from t'north
fixing his 2.25 diesel on a budget of £10 and a few cakes - it
was a much better read and the tech forum wasn't full of
complete shit like bolting the wrong turbo on the wrong engine.
On the subject of petrol, a pattern has emerged here - everybody
loves a good SU carb, they really are a winner 8)

Once upon a time i would have had stern words with anyone that
wanted to oust their 4 pot petrol in favour of a TDi ....
However the combination of fuel costs/my 109 being my daily
drive/camping barge and having driven Traceys Tdi powered 88"
Leads me to think that IF i want to continue owning my 109 and
USING it rather than it being a seldom used ornament,
Then TDI is the future .
It'll be done in a way that should someone want to in the future
return it to petrol then minimum work will be needed .And if you
don't like it then tough you've either won the lotto or have
never driven with TDi powa !!!!! ;D

I think anyone who gets so wound up about what other people do
to their property needs to lighten up a bit. No offence Dave but
as you have been there, done that and got the T shirt, it
doesn't mean no-one else should.

I think what's really irritating about every other man and his
dog converting to TDi is that so many of them can't use the
search facility, and just keep asking the same old questions.
That and the "jam it in any old how before midnight on sunday"
attitude and the shockingly shit state of some of the
conversions, in which case it doesn't matter what flavour engine
is going in and what it's replacing, it's just the fact that
people are doing a shit job because they can't be arsed. In this
respect our European and colonial cousins put us to shame
really.

I apologise if I come across as irate or offensive - not been a
good week in Daveworld. I am not by any means saying anybody
shouldnt try it because I said so, that would be daft...
I did say I think Tdi's are good but I echo what Nat says
though, he is spot on and that is part of the point I was trying
to make.

Another good reason for keeping the original engine, then...
No-one can tell you how shit it is! :D
"Another" forum has a dedicated Tdi section now with plenty of
stickys. Perhaps that is the way forward and anyone too stupid
to find their way there and get the answers they need gets an
instant entry in the fail bin.

The 2.5 petrol point is well taken, the one I've now got in the
88 is going very nicely now. With the boingy brigade throwing
them away at a rate of knots to stick tdis in they've gotta be
one of the best bargains out there IMHO, and gassed there's
bugger all in it running-costs wise. Plus of course if you stick
a tdi in a non-tax exempt utility darn sarf you're fucked by the
LEZ.
