       Horace the project

I was going to copy this over from the old forum, but I've given
up trying to get in it, so I'll start again.
       Here's Horace, a 1980 Series 3 Petrol.
This is where he was parked for the last 15 years until I bought
him in December. Doesn't look too bad with a bit of sun on his
       flanks.

Back at home in the wet he was a slighter sadder sight

Stripping down started and lots of rust was found.

I've made a start on the axle today.
It's a bit of an odd one as it comes with some extra bracing.
The only time I seen one like it before was on a recovery truck.
Problem being that a bit of it had rusted away. I'd been
thinking about welding it up, but having seen how compacted with
mud it was I decided it was probably better without.

So I started cutting bits off, being careful not to cut into the
       casing
  HTML http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m105/crazah31/Horace/3b4376da.jpg
It took a while, but I'm quite happy with the result.

Next I dropped the oil from it, this doesn't look very pleasant
  HTML http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m105/crazah31/Horace/61f0baac.jpg
Then halfshafts out which brought some chocolate sauce with them

That's it for today as I need to order wheel bearings and new
seals, hopefully to put on next weekend.

       Little bit more done today.
I've got the primer on the rear axle parts. Just needs a couple
of coats of black next. It's a pain at this time of year
getting it painted with not having a chance to do any in the
       evenings.

I've also picked up a replacement front axle, quite pleased as
the swivels look in good nick so I might not need to replace
       them

That back axle is from a 2 or 2a and the bracing is standard on
series 2 and 2a axles. Perhaps you've got a bitsa there?

The bloke I got the axle off said it was from a 2, I'd never
       noticed it like that before.
You learn something new everday ;)
