Hitler rolls his eyes, and overall just seems to be disgusted by
the idea of elections. Germany's support goes to the Nationalist
candidate, but God knows what'll happen if that candidate loses.

Ciano casts his vote, then turns to speak to Lebrun. "I'm sorry
sir, but your suggestion is preposterous. Both I and Mr. Hitler
here are compromising and supporting a vote for Spain's leader.
However, you say that no matter who we choose to support, Spain
must have a democracy. Surely you realize you are being unfair.
Although we are not in support of such a matter, if this council
chooses the Republicans, then we will allow a democracy in
Spain. In return, you must allow Fascism should we choose
Franco. You must see that you are in no position to argue this,
your military might is far below ours, and in holding this
election at all we are giving you a greater advantage than you
would have otherwise. You are not an unintelligent man- I am
convinced that you understand my point."

Lebrun looks puzzled: "It may have been lost in translation, but
I was under the impression that we would organize an election in
Spain to allow the people to decide who should rule them. Giving
this council power to settle this by ballot doesn't sit well
with me because not all of Europe is present and because it
imposes rule of some over others. Anyway, a tie appears likely
in such a ballot as we would be casting because of what we all
have expressed; Nationalists: Italy and Germany, Republicans:
France and USSR, Monarchy: Yugoslavia (or abstention). This
result would seem likely to me from where I stand. M.
Chamberlain is on his way at my request, and we could allow him
to break a tie, although that would not likely be agreeable to
some present."

Hitler doesn't say anything; he has a seat and taps his fingers
on the armrest, seeming irritated.

Stalin eyes Hitler, dislike starting to course through his
brain. His attitude towards Marx gave him some concern, but it
was the way he sat now, already tired of these Diplomatic
proceedings, that made him more nervous than he had been before.
"If he starts a war," he thought darkly, "he won't stop until
he's done." Secretly glad that he had already made a treaty with
the German, he leaned over to whisper to the Yugoslavian Monarch
"I wish to talk to you, after the meeting. Bring Lebrun." And
stood to address the room.
"As the vote is tied for the moment I propose that we adjourn
until our English friend can attend."

"Thanks for the suggestion, M. Stalin. It seems like this
impasse is an appropriate time to take a rest. M. Chamberlain
will not arrive for a few days yet." Lebrun stands and shakes
hands with all those present at the table. "Shall we depart?"

King Peter stands up and says
"Since we cant find a solution best to leave it as it is.Better
to leave it broken then to break it even more. "
He then walks to Lebrun and whispers to him
"Mister Stalin said that we need to talk. We'll meet here later."

"Yes... Let us adjourn for the day." Hitler gives a curt nod; in
some time, he leaves the room, several bodyguards following him
down the hallway.
That night is deathly quiet; no one hears a peep out of the
Fuhrer, and none know what he's planning.

Joseph Stalin stands, waiting for the other two to join him. He
stroked his mustache absently as he debated what to say and how
to say it. He checked his watch, then began to pace.

Lebrun makes the short walk back to the negotiation room and
greets Stalin cordially:
"Good afternoon, M. Stalin. It's good to discuss things with a
more friendly leader. I can't say I personally or my party
agrees with your ideology, but there is a large and rising
coalition of socialists in France, and I must represent them as
well. You must agree that we have much more in common than we do
with the fascists in Germany and Italy. Anyway, I'm ready and
willing to talk, and I'm sure that we can come to an agreement
among the three of us much faster than we can with everyone
present. If we can agree on some policies to follow as a group,
then we could have a large voting bloc in this conference."
