Two Wins in Two
Two wins from the opening two games — now that’s what you call a
start. Thames Ironworks have made it back-to-back victories,
although this one certainly wasn’t straightforward.
A blistering first half put us firmly in control, with
Esparragurza opening the scoring before A_Forward_8 and
K_Naranbold added two more to leave Shrews FC staring at a 3-0
deficit. At that point, the points looked safely in the bag.
Then came the second-half wobble.
Steve_Bull pulled one back almost immediately, and Myung-Ho_Kim
made it 3-2 with 18 minutes remaining. Suddenly, what had looked
like a comfortable afternoon became an unnecessarily tense
finish. Shrews FC hit the post and kept pushing, but thankfully
Thames held their nerve.
The final statistics showed just how close it became, with both
sides having nine shots on target and 50% possession.
Two games, two wins. Not perfect, but six points are six points
— and we’ll happily take them.

Pompey Chimes 0-3 Sarnians
South sea Stadium, Division One
If football was judged on effort alone, David_James would have
been awarded a knighthood by half-time. This was one of those
afternoons where the scoreline somehow managed to flatter the
losing side. We arrived at Southsea Stadium. expecting a
difficult challenge. Werewilf's sides are rarely easy to play
against and there is enough experience in that Pompey squad to
punish any lapse in concentration. What followed, however, was
ninety minutes of Sarnians football at its most relentless. The
early signs were there. Kai_Pavlov tested David_James inside the
opening minute. E_Staggs followed soon after. By six minutes,
B_Tanaka had given us the lead after latching onto a ball from
Ember_Tuipers and benefiting from a cruel bobble that left
David_James stranded. Sometimes football is chess. Sometimes
it's a divot. Either way, we'll take it.
The goal settled us and from that point our midfield began to
control proceedings. Kai_Pavlov, E_Staggs and Codi_Domino moved
the ball with the confidence of three blokes who already knew
where the next pass was going before they'd received the current
one. The second goal arrived midway through the half and was
fully deserved. Codi_Domino collected possession, drifted into
space and produced a finish that sent the travelling support
into celebration. At 2-0 we could have been forgiven for easing
off.
Apparently nobody told the players. Laszlo_Kiss hit the woodwork
twice. Kai_Pavlov hit the post. C_Ajak hit the post. B_Tanaka
hit the woodwork. Codi_Domino should probably have had another.
There were moments when the goal frame seemed to be enjoying a
better afternoon than Pompey's entire defence. And yet, despite
all that domination, the match still demanded resilience.
J_Chalabert was largely a spectator in the first half but
produced several important moments when called upon. His command
of the area continues to impress and he collected crosses and
corners with a confidence beyond his years. Then came the
turning point. At 54 minutes Belisarius was shown a straight red
card. Whether you agree with the decision or not, there was no
changing it. For a moment the contest threatened to shift. Five
minutes later H_Hreidarsson received his marching orders at the
other end. Parity restored. Football has a funny way of
balancing its books.
The decisive third goal arrived shortly afterwards from a
set-piece routine. E_Staggs showed great awareness, slipping the
ball into Kai_Pavlov rather than shooting himself. Kai did the
rest. Officially it was our third goal. Unofficially it felt
like reward for a performance that could easily have produced
six or seven. The statistics tell their own story.
74% possession.
42 attempts on goal.
30 key passes.
17 shots on target.
Those aren't the numbers of a team hanging on. Those are the
numbers of a team dictating terms. Special mention must go to
Kai_Pavlov, deservedly named Man of the Match. One goal, one
assist, nine shots and the sort of midfield display that makes
opposition managers wake up in the middle of the night muttering
his name. B_Tanaka was electric throughout and opened the
scoring. Codi_Domino once again looked every inch the creative
heartbeat of the side.
C_Ajak quietly produced one of those performances that coaches
adore and supporters sometimes overlook. Four key tackles, six
key passes, excellent defensive work and leadership throughout.
As for Laszlo_Kiss, on another day he leaves Southsea Stadium
with a hat-trick. The woodwork may wish to file a restraining
order. Two matches. Two wins. Seven goals scored. One conceded.
Now before anybody starts dusting off talk of title defences and
dynasty building, let's all remember what we've been saying
since day one. We're rebuilding. We're developing. We're
growing. The encouraging thing is that the foundations seem
pretty sturdy. The first version of Sarnians became the only
club to win Division One twice. This version is still
introducing itself. And I have to say, I'm enjoying the first
few chapters.

Flyboys 1 - 4 Helsinki
With two winable games to start the season it was important that
Helsinki hit the ground running and didn't start the season by
giving up any ground on their rivals. So it was delightful to
see Helsinki back up their opening day victory with four goals
away from home. Six points from six will do quite nicely to
start the season. Cygnus and Karrar scored for the second game
running to get off to a nice bit of form and SHynkarenko
followed up his assist in week 1 with another assist. E_Lfie
also came on for a cameo and first appearance for the youngster.

[center]SUPER SUB JUSSI SEALS WIN[/center]
[center]Darlington 0 – 3 Golden Eagles FC[/center]
Angelo Nazari and Jussi Härmäläinen scored in Eagles win away to
Darlington as Eagles go two for two as they keep pace with
Hellhounds. The hosts show plenty of fight, forcing Rafael
Alvarado to make 6 saves during the game, but Eagles dominated
the midfield. Nazari put in a man of the match award winning
performance with 3 key passes, an assist and a goal. The
Filiphio’s opener came just before half-time, when Aksel
Mikkelsen held the ball up well, as he wited for support, Nazari
overlapping run, he passed the ball and the club captain scored
with a scorcher of a shot.
Härmäläinen was bough on after an hour in place of Julio Xavier
and the Finn made an instant impact, Juan Álvarez played a
lovely pass to the forward and he put the ball in the bottom
corner. 2-0 to the visitors! And Härmäläinen grabbed a second 6
minute from the end with the assist from Nazari, the Finn’s shot
took a wicked deflection to beat the stranded A. Bartlett. Solid
win for the visitors to make it two for two.
Eagles remain second on goal difference, breathing down
Hellhounds’ neck. But next up for Eagles is their X-box Trophy
game against Rangers.

[center]SCIMITARS SNATCH WIN IN SEVEN GOAL THRILLER[/center]
[center]Rix Bombardiers 3 – 4 Shymkent Scimitar [/center]
What a breathless match this was as Scimitar picked up their
second win in two games with a thrilling win over RIX in
Division Two. Lukass Vapne got the Latvians up and running in
the first minute to stun the visitors. However, Scimitars kept
their composure, Vahid Gholizadeh had the keeper beat in the 9th
minute, but he was saved by the woodwork. However, the visitors
did eventually pulled level through Mushin Ahmedov in the 25th
minute, he wont he ball out wide, before cutting inside to
score.
Rix re-took the lead in the 41st minute, as R_Klavinskis chipped
the ball over Adit Abbas, but Tarek Madibo got Scimitars back on
terms just before the break as he tapped in Umar Karimov’s
free-kick. Vladilsav Mochalov then put the visitors ahead in the
49th minute with a fine solo effort that dipped suddenly to out
fox the keeper. 3-2 to Scimitars! R. Rupeiks pulled RIX level on
the hour mark, as he rounded the keeper and scored. Then with 9
minutes to go, Mochalov scored with a powerful header to put
Scimitars back in front, 4-3 now! RIX had chances to pull level
again, but it was not to be and the visitors picked up a famous
win. And the Kazakh team are now up to 3rd.
