PENALTY HEARTBREAK FOR EAGLES
Pompey Chimes 2-2 Golden Eagles FC
Pompey win 4-3 on penalties
A tough night saw Eagles dumped out of the KO Cup in a penalty
shootout after things finished 2-2 after extra time. Eagles
thought they had taken the lead after Pavel Chernyshev scored
with a wonderful lob over David James in the 25th minute.
However, the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build up, what
a terrible decision!
Then 4 minutes later, Pompey went up the other end and scored
through Glen Johnson, the visiting fans were livid! Diog
Guillems eventually managed to equalise in the 58th minute, the
Portuguese midfielder showing some great skill there, James
wasn't happy with his defenders.
With the game finally poised, Eagles keeper Rafeal Alvarado gave
away a penalty after bringing down Peter Crouch in the 73rd
minute. Silly by the Ecuadorian and Crouch stepped up to score
the resulting penalty, Pompey re-rake the lead.
Eagles tried to find a way back in again and they eventually
did, but not until the 91st minute. Kai Matsumoto found Steve
Bowen with a great pass and the Welshman buried his shot to take
the game to extra time.
Matsumoto then rode his luck in extra time, as he almost gave
away another penalty. It looked like he might have bought down
Patrik Berger, but the ref instead accused the Czech midfielder
of diving. Neither team could find the killing blow in extra
time, Dustan Huevo probably had the best chance for Eagles, but
James just got a finger tip to his headed effort.
And so Pompey won the coin toss, Crouch went up first having
already scored the spot earlier on, but he skied his effort!
Then Chernyshev and Guillems converted for Eagles, while D.
Anderton and Berger did the same for Pompey. Darío Bourrin and
A. McGloughin both missed while Álvarez and Niko Kranjcar to
make it 3-3. Eagles still had the advantage, until Jussi
Härmäläinen put his effort wide, what drama! H. Hreidarsson then
put the hosts in the driving seat before Bowen stepped up. He
struck his penalty well, but the keeper saved it sending Pompey
into the semis as the Eagles players sunk to their knees.
"That was a rough result for us, we didn't do enough and Pompey
had our number. The ref didn't help much, but he was poor for
both sides to be honest. We will have to pick ourselves up, we
still have division one and the league cup to think about. We
don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves, we got to bounce
back." Said Dave Rosewell in a post match interview.
