gear box blues

I am rebuilding the gear box again. After first engine gearbox
rebuild, I did not have 3rd gear. Although it worked on the
bench and 3rd could be selected, when on the road under load 3rd
cannot be selected. So the engine came out and I found that the
dog gear did not ful mesh with the 3rd cog. So I made some
shims and put it all back together, presto 3rd gear was there,
then I started to get an intermittent rattle in 4th. So its
back to the bench and engine out again. Trouble is the 2nd gear
dog is intemittently catching the 1st cog when in 4th. I am
thinking of moving shims around, but I wonder if anyone has the
correct tolerances as so far I have only been able to do this
blind by trial and error, it seems more error then anything
else!
I am taking the opportunity to also sort out the chain adjuster
which has been bugging me.
regards
tony

There's an article on GuzziTref that another member managed to
get translated, but I've not been able to upload it to our
resource yet.
E-mail sent to Tony with file.
Here's the link to the article.

Re no gears, might be an idea to try the adjustment before
breaking in there.
If you go to the links section, there's a link to a Box account
that includes Workshop Manual an Rider's Handbook. The
Handbook's in English, and shows how to adjust the gear
selector.
The WM (Italian) hows how to dismantle the gearbox.

there are no correct tolerances
shimming the gearbox is just shifting and adding shims until the
clearance between all the cogs is the same.
make sure to the widths of the shafts are well shimmed in the
gearbox , if the whole shaft can shift from side to side your
carefully selected shims are not going to help much.
just take your time until you are 100% happy.
last time i spent a evening on this job
