that pesky chain adjuster

Hi Guys,
When the time came to paint the frame I couldn't resist the
temptation to knock off those awful brackets that the chain
adjuster relies upon to tighten the chain.
You know the ones, they get bent and then they fall off when you
try to straighten them with a big hammer.
Then what ? well, necessity being the mother of invention, I
came up with a pair of little brackets which hook over the end
of the swinging arm.
Time will tell how successful they are but they do look very
promising.
I just thought that the pictures might help someone out of a
little bit of trouble.

Looks like everyone (including me) managed to miss your post
Tonya.... ???
These look really swish; have you acquired a milling machine as
well?
Might be of interest to George, as one of his had been bodged up
with weld and some scrap off a Yugoslavian floor....
What stops them sliding up and down and off the swinging arm end
though?

Well Sir,
The end of the swinging arm is flat so that will (I hope !) hold
them in place until the axle nut is tightened.
I'll have to tighten the side where the adjuster stud thingy
locates on the drive hub I guess ? in case it tries to turn.
Time will tell ! They are at the platers at the moment.

As you have already removed bent bits do what I have done get a
pair of chain adjusters off jap bike, mine were of a Yamaha 650,
with a little modification to the spindle they fit perfectly.
Would post photo if I new how.
Jake if you are around anytime bring your camera and you could
post the photos.

Hi
I had trouble with mine too. I find that the adjuster do not
have enough purchasse on the swing arm and do not grip properly.
New replacement adjusters are if anything worse. Its not
helped by the fact that the swing arm are worn where the
adjusters and the spacers have gouched out bit of the swing arm.
I finally taken it on and removed the swing arm, built up the
worn bits with weld and made my own adjusters which are larger
in size to get a better grip on the arm. I also removed the
persky tabs and welded a cube with a hole for the adjusting
bolt.

That looks nice and solid!
BTW I've uploaded your photo to Photobucket, as I'm not ure how
much free space we get for attachments on this free site....

Here's George's version. It's (he thinks) an XS650
adjuster.which seems to fit OK.
Procedure is the machine down the spacer by 3 mm to accommodate
the inside arm, and the inside arm needs machined out to take
the axle (outside hole fits OK).
The lug for the stock adjuster needs cut off of course. The end
of the swinging arm seems big enough to take the adjuster screw,
but a sensible mod might be to cut a shallow groove in the end
to provide a more positive location, or even weld a cup on, to
locate it side to side as well as up and down.
