Separating Camshaft from Clutch Side Cover
By: patentgeek Date: August 13, 2017, 10:36 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
When I removed the clutch side cover from my engine, I was
unsuccessful keeping the camshaft gear in mesh to prevent it
from pulling out with the side cover as recommended in this
       post:

And even now that the cover is off, the camshaft doesn't want to
come off. From the parts diagram, it looks like the camshaft
should just slip out of the oil seal. What am I missing?

Did you unscrew the nut on the camshaft ? It is fixed in place
by a dent. When it's off, you can take the cs out to the rear.

Thanks. I guess the camshaft nut is the "etc." in "Undo the
cover bolts etc." from the Paul Friday post.
I suspected that might be the case but didn't want to mess with
       the nut without checking.

It's worthwhile downloading the Paul Friday archives, which
carry more detail, and would perhaps have saved you this
       problem.
The download is here, and big at nearly 60Mb:

Update. The camshaft is now separated from the clutch cover.
I found it helpful to attach a socket and breaker bar to the
flywheel nut to prevent the engine from rotating. I wedged the
breaker bar against the kickstarter to prevent it from rotating.
