Could a more experienced member throw a light on an oil leak.

The engine has sprung an oil leak and I can`t work out what`s
going on.There are some pointers which I will explain.The leak
is substantial with a pool appearing on top of the crankcase on
the plateau between the clutch lever and dynamo mounting
bracket. The leak will not develop when the bike is stationary
no matter how long the engine is running.I have not seen the
leak appear on short journeys of 15 minutes or less.On journeys
of 30 minutes or more the leak appears.If I mop up the leak
until squeaky clean the leak will not show it`s self until I
move off ie no matter how long the engine is running with the
bike stationary the leak will not develop.I can't work out how
to observe the source of the leak.The out of the box part of my
brain has even thought about mounting a camera aimed at this
part of the engine whilst riding but I don`t have a suitable
camera.I would be very grateful for any suggestion's.

Not sure, but to put it in perspective, I convinced myself the
seal between the casings had failed on mine, as I had oil
dribbling out of the left footrest mount when parked on the
sidestand. Turned out the lower rocker box seal was leaking (on
the right side), and when in motion, it was getting blown back
along the engine, and dribbling down by the right footrest, and
then working its way through to the left. I guess your leak must
be from somewhere high up to reach the top of the cases.
Cylinder base gasket maybe? It's not coming from the breather
hose is it? If the sump's overfilled you might get gloops of oil
coming up through that, but assume that's unlikely. The air
filter isn't oiled up from the breather?
All I can suggest (apart from the camera) is to clean the whole
area again, find a quiet road, and stop frequently, so you can
locate the start of it happening. Dusting the area with talcum
powder sometimes shows where it's coming from.
