It does look pretty robust, much more so than I'd expected, but
given the reputation, it would have to go. When you say ejector
pin marks, you mean it's been a pressure diecasting?

Yes it's definitely been diecast, and it looks sound, but
there's that lingering doubt. In the knowledge that the two part
plastic filter has stood the test of time, I suppose it's the
obvious way to go, but as has been said elsewhere, the
filtration is a bit coarse. It's a shame that the forum member
who fitted the KN157 filter hasn't updated as to whether or not
it has been successful regarding the oil pressure. If the oil
light goes out, I assume that means it's ok?
The dealer who supplied my bike has offered to get a filter for
me, but they will have the same problem as me, unless they have
another source for spares. I'm waiting delivery from Italy, of
a new outer filter, so, providing it's ok, I only need an inner
one. After looking at the Aermacchi site I can buy a pair of
used filters for about £20 including shipping. Trouble is its in
the US so if I order it, it means yet another long wait!
If I'm not careful, I'll have a stock of them!

yes. basically, fitting it stabilised the oil pressure from the
oil light flashing occasionaly to a steady reading of 60 psi
even at tickover

So it's the way to go, then?

My last post was a rhetorical question - we all have to make our
own decisions regarding what we do to our bikes, so thanks to
everyone who has contributed to this thread. It's all
interesting stuff, and a big help to us new to the NF.
To recap, my filter set-up seems to be of an older type, prone
to causing potentially serious problems.
The two part plastic type filter appears to be the most
prevalent set up.
The KN157 looks to be an option which provides extremely good
filtration, needs a slight modification on one end but has been
proved to work.
A similar filter from Germany appears to be a bit shorter than
all of the other options so not sure if it will be suitable,
although it's advertised as an alternative. I had a very quick
response from the seller yesterday when I asked for dimensions,
which was commendable.
Not yet decided which way to go yet. I've complicated things
for myself by ordering the outer from Italy, so who knows when
that will arrive. I have the option of ordering the two part
filter for a 250 Aermacchi from USA, again with a long delivery
period.
Or I can get the KN157 and the one from Germany fairly quickly
and get it sorted.
I'll keep you posted - I'm sure you're all on tenterhooks!!! ;D

Be carefully we the KN filter! The resistance it to high for
mounting in the sucking line, especially when the oil is cold.
This is very bad for the camshaft and rods! I tried it and went
back as I recognised this. I would use your original special
setting, it looks quite good....
Cheers Kater

I've been mulling this over all day. First off, I think I'm
being a bit too paranoid about my original set up; after all,
it's been in the engine since 1971! It looks sound, with no sign
of cracks or deterioration, so I'm inclined to put it back in
til I get my preferred option, which is the two part plastic
filter. Thanks for your input Kater. I hadn't considered the
resistance resulting from the micro filter construction.

Not sure if this is on topic but someone here in germany is
selling a modern filter from another bike that according to him
fits the NF perfectly.

Any details of what that filter is?

The one in Germany that I enquired about is 48 mm long, 40mm
diameter with an 11mm dia hole, and it looks as though it's a "
paper" filter. I seem to remember it's a fair bit shorter than
mine, so I discounted it.
