Oil Filter
By: OldeGoat Date: September 1, 2016, 2:45 am
---------------------------------------------------------
After a good run on Tuesday, I decided to drop the oil while it
was really hot. Unfortunately, at the crucial moment of undoing
the drain plug the final turn, my arm touched the exhaust, which
made me jump, consequently drain plug and filter fell into the
oil so I didn't see which way it came out. My filter doesn't
conform with those illustrated in any of the documents I've
looked at, inasmuch as mine is a single, washable plastic
filter, open one end and closed the other. The closed end has a
"pointed" projection. The filter goes into an alloy tube which
has a hole one end with an O ring insert which locates over the
projecting stud which in turn holds a spring. The "open" end of
the tube is castellated - four slots machined around the
circumference. Obviously, there are only two options as to
which way up the filter fits, so I'm going to try it this
morning, but if anyone can provide a positive solution, just for
peace of mind, I'd be grateful, to say the least.
After my ride, looking round the engine, I noticed oil on Cyl
Head and barrel fins adjacent to one of the Cyl head bolts
(flywheel side) which leads me to believe I may have a head
gasket problem. Again, all comments / experience welcome.
Thank you in advance.

The filter should have two concentric screens, with a smaller
mesh cylinder fitted inside the larger outer cylinder. If you
have only one, part of it's missing. There's a thread on here
somewhere about filters, and the fact that they are common to
Aermacchi singles too. Carteful; there's a spring above the
filter. Mine usually stays in the sump, but they can come out
with the filter.
Re the leak, mine dribbles from the rocker box, and of course
oil gets everywhere. I'd suggest a good dose of Gunk to get
everything perfectly clean, and once it's dry, take it for a
short run to identify the source; it might not be where you
think.

The filter will only fit one way, so that solved the " which way
up" problem, however, the alloy tube into which the filter fits
seems to be OEM, but perhaps someone has changed it at some
stage. I've seen the paper filter advertised by a German source
and wondered if that was a straight replacement. Will clean the
oil off and give it a try, as suggested before going any
further, but if the head has to come off, is it worth doing the
unleaded conversion and the 8mm valves?

I guess it depends on how lucky you feel. In saying that, I'm
sure someone (huub maybe) said they still dropped a valve with
the 8mm stems, so I'm not convinced it's such a great fix. Maybe
better to check the valve guides for wear, and replace if
required. I'm guessing the issue is guide wear, and once there's
enough play, they can jam, but that is no more than a guess.
Unleaded seats may be worth it, but if there's little sign of
recession when you have the head off, may be as well to wait
until there is. I have a spare head on the shelf, supposedly
with unleaded seats, but the original is still chuffing away, so
haven't felt the need to pull it all apart...

Here's a photo of the Aermacchi Sprint oil filter. Same as the
NF with inner and outer mesh.

Ours don't have the steel cap, and here's the parts diagram
showing how it all should go together:

Note the spring on the pipe, which can get left behind on the
pipe, or get lost in your old engine oil....

As a matter of interest, I put a spanner on the cyl head nuts
and found it was possible to nip them up without too much
effort, so maybe that's the problem. A run tomorrow may provide
an answer. Regarding the valves, having thought about it, I
can't see that I would gain much by changing to 8mm stems, so am
not going to do it.
Have ordered the plastic outer filter so I can discard the alloy
tube, but looking at the photo it would appear that I also need
a new inner (item 22), as mine is closed and with a cone in the
centre at the end opposite the flange.
All good fun, ain't it?

Sounds like a bodge from someone who didn't have an inner. I've
rarely seen an NF filter for sale, but the Aermacchi ones come
up quite often, usually in the States. Possible that one of the
parts suppliers has NOS NF filters though.

I don't think it's a bodge because the alloy outer casing
contains an o ring which fits nicely on item 38, and the filter
fits well inside the alloy casing. I've read that this casing
is prone to breaking up, thus dropping bits which then get
distributed around the engine. That's why I want to change it.
Looks like my next option, while searching for an inner filter,
is to buy the paper one and see how that fits.
I need to try posting pics on here which will clarify what I'm
on about!
Thanks for the continued interest and responses, banquo.

You have an alloy one?
That must be early.
They were made out of Mazak or something, and apparently prone
to disintegration as you say. I think they were generally
replaced with the plastic version, although I'm not sure if they
were a direct replacement.

Yes, it looks like Mazak. The bike is 1971. 👍
